FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES DURIEUX, a citizen of the Kingdom of Belgium, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Rocking-Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others IO skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in that class of fans connected to rocking-chairs and the like and rotated by the movement thereof; and it consists in the construction, novel combination, and adaptation of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View showing fan and mechanism attached to chair. Fig. 2 is a perspective side View showing fan and mechanism detached. Fig. 3 is a detail front view of driving-pulley and ratchet-drum. Fig. 4 is a detail side view of ratchet-drum and pulley. Fig. 5 is a de- 2 5 tail side view of set-screw.

In the drawings, A refers to the blades of the fan, which are propeller-shaped and made,

preferably, of light metal, or may be of any desired material.

B is a driving-pulley, which is placed between drums C, said pulley having its face concave.

3 5 D is an upright bar, to which drums C and fan are attached.

E is a small pulley attached to D as shown in Fig. 2, and over which passes a belt F, which connects E with driving-pulley B.

G and H are cords which pass around drums O and which are attached to lever K, as shown in Fig. 1.

L is a spiral spring.

Attached to end of lever K is an eye N, which is provided with a set-screw.

Passing through tube N is a rod M, which is provided with a roller or caster, as designated by P, and is adapted to be adjusted with respect to the lever, so as to regulate the stroke of the same.

0 is a clamp for fixedly connecting the upright bar D to rocking-chair Q.

R are ratchets, which are placed upon end of drums O.

S designates pawls, which are attached on each side of driving-pulley.

T are springs, which are attached on each side of driving-pulley and which control the movement of the pawls.

Within each drum 0 (not shown) I place a coil or clock spring, which enables cords G and H to be returned when drawn forward or backward.

In practice my device is attached to a rocking-chair by means of the clamp O, as shown in Fig. 1, the rod M being placed at any desired elevation. As the occupant of the chair moves same back and forth the lever K, which is attached to D by means of a pivot, swings back and forth, thus causing cords G and H to rotate drums O, and as the drums rotate the ratchets on said drums engage the pawls on driving-pulley B and rotate the driving-pulley, the latter by means of belt F driving the fan rapidly with a steady revolution. Where it is desired to attach the fan to a sewingmachine, the construction may be slightly changed and the same result obtained as when attached to a rocking-chair.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a fan attachment, the combination, with the upright bar connected to the seat of a rocking-chair, a rotatable shaft journaled at the upper end of said upright bar and carrying a fan at one end, a drum fixed on said shaft, a spring-actuated drum mounted on a shaft connected to the upright bar beneath the fan-shaft, ratchet-wheels fixed on the 0 drum adjacent to the middle thereof, a pulley turning loosely on the drum between. the ratchet-wheels and carrying spring-backed pawls adapted to engage said ratchet-wheels, and a belt connecting the said pulley with the drum on the fan-shaft, of a lever fulcrumed on the upright bar adjacent to the lower end thereof and carrying an eye at its lower end, the rod adj ustably fixed in the eye of the lever and carrying a caster-wheel at its lower end, a retracting-spring connecting In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in the upper portion of the lever and the uppresence of two witnesses. right bar, and cords connected at one end to the lever adjacent to the ends thereof and CHARLES DURIEUX. 5 at their other ends to the periphery of the Witnesses:
