P. VOGEL. ROCKING CHAIR.
Patented Deo. 5; 1882.

` VEnrE'Diiiruon vOeEL, OE NEW YORK, N, Y.
ROCKING-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,757, dated December 5, 1882.l
' Application filed September 8, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
f Be it known that I, FRIEDERIOH VOGEL, a ctfzen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, State ot' New York, have invented new and useful improvements in `Rocking- (ilhairs, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of rocking-chairs in which the chair proper rests and rocks upon a base portion, and the said parts connected together by means of warms and springs, whereby the play or'rnovement of the chair upon the base is controlled and limited. The object of my invention is to improve the connecting devices so that while the same shall be ot' cheap and simple construction they will efiicientlyand properly perform their functions and the chair as a Whole be much improved thereby; and theinvention consists in the combination, with a chair proper and a base or support, of a pivoted slotted link, through the slot of which a pin on the base projects, and a spring coiled around said pin, the ends of which are secured to depending arms pivoted with the slotted link to the chair-runners, substantially in the Vmanner and for the purpose- ,hereinafter set forth.
1n the annexed drawings, Figure l is an ele- "vation ot a rocking-chair to which my inven- `tion is applied, and Fig. 2 1s a crosssection ot' the saine on tbe line w y.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the chair proper, which rests and rocks upon the base or support B. These parts may be of any ordinary or suitable construction.
d is a link slotted at its lower end, through which slot the pin c, secured to the plate b, passes. This plate is securely attached to the base B by means of screws or otherwise. The link d at its upper end is pivoted to the plate a of the chair-runners, and there are also pivoted at the same point the arms c c, `depending' upon each side ot' the link, as shown, the lower ends of the said arms being bent into hooks to receive the endsfof the spring s. This spring is coiled spirally around the pin and. serves to keep the arms c c at the proper angle. It also serves to bring the chair in its proper vertical position. The pin e is by preference covered by a rubber tube, t,.a washer, w, being placed between said tube and the link d.
Instead ofmaking the arms c c separate, they may be made in one piece, if desired, in this case forming a bell-crank lever. K
lt will be seen that in using the chair its movement forward or backward is limited and controlled by the link d, the pin e, working in the slot in said link, preventing too great a movement in either direction by striking against the upper or lower end of the slot. The spring s, being attached to the arms c c, as before described, tends to bring the chair to a vertical position after being moved either backward or forward, and thus renders the rocking of the chair easy and agreeable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with the chair A and its base B, ot the longitudinally-slotted link d, pivoted to the chair and receiving in its slot a pin which is attached to the base, and the arms c c, pivoted together at their upper ends to tho chair and at their lower ends connected with the ends of aspring which is coiled around the pin c, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my 7 hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. v
