A. CHAMBERS. HAMMER.
Patented Feb. 2, 1892.
0 d L H 5/ u/ M m B d 7 a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Aa'rntm onAiunnns, on WILLIAMS BRIDGE, NEW YORK.
HAMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,191, dated February 2, 1892.
Application filed October 21,1890. Serial No 368,772. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR CHAMBERS, of \Villiams Bridge, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Hammers, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
Myinvention relates to an improvementin ham mers, cspeciallycarpenters hammers, and has for its object to provide a hammer with a side striking-face of an elastic or a slightlyelastic material, the said side face being especially adapted for striking the handles of chisels or similar tools in cutting mortises and performing other work for which such tools are employed, thus combining in one tool a mallet and a hammer, one in no wise interfering with the other, and providing a han1- mer with a means Wherebya blow upon a wooden handle will not injure the same.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out inrthe claims. i Reference is to be had to the accompanymg drawings, forming a part of this specificatlon, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figurel is a side elevation of a hammer provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the hammer, the section being taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a hammer-head,illustrating a modified form of the improvement.
The hammer 10 is of the usual construction, including the format-ion of the eye 11. In the side of the hammer an opening 13 is produced, preferably circular and extending through from the outer face into the eye of the hammer, as best shown in Fig. 2. The side Wall a of the opening is chamfered or beveled from the out-er face of the hammer inward to the eye, whereby the diameter of the opening at the eye is much greater than at the outer side face of the hammer.
Two disks 14 and 15 are usually employed to fill the opening, which disks are made of an elastic or a slightly-elastic material, such as rubber or leather. Each disk represents, practically, the frustum of a cone, the outer disk being the thicker and of such diameter that it neatly fits into the opening and extends some distance beyond the side surface of the hammer, as shown at a. Theinner face of the inner disk is slightly tapered, and the lower edge 16 is thinner than the upper edge 17, the taper being gradual, and the inclination of the tapering surface is such that when the disk is fitted into the opening in engagement with the outer disk its lower inner face will be flush with the wall of the hammereye be low the opening and project beyond the wall above the opening. The disks are inserted in the side opening from the hammer-eye, and are securely held in place by thehandle 18. \Vhen it is driven in the eye and wedged, as by means of the conical form of the opening and the chamfered periphery of the disks, the latter cannot escape outward and the handle prevents them from droppinginward.
The handle in entering the eye readily passes the lower edge of the inner disk; but as it reaches the upper edge it presses firmly upon the upper projecting inner surface of the disk, thereby preventing the same from turning. It will be understood that instead of using two disks, as illustrated, a single disk only may be employed, and that instead of extending the side aperture through to the eye of the hammer a recess 19 may be substituted therefor, having undercut walls, the elastic material being forced into the said recess.
l'Iavin g thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A hammer-head provided with a side opening having beveled walls and extending through to the eye, and an elastic or a slightly elastic plug inserted in said opening and essentially conforming to the contour thereof, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a hammer-head provided with a side opening extending through to the eye and having beveled Walls, of an elastic or a slightly-elastic plug fitted in the said opening, the inner face of said plug being beveled, and a handle securing the plug in position in the opening, as and for the purpose specified.
ARTHUR CHAMBERS.
