SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,910, dated December 8, 1891.

To all whom it mayconccrn:
Be it known thatI, BENJAMINBEOK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Elko, in the county of Putnam and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Axes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in axes.
The object of the invention is to provide an ax with a comparatively thin blade, having beveled cutting-edges, and in the rear of the eye of the ax with a projection which will give to the ax the same weight in the rear of the eye that the blade or that portion in front of the eye has, said projecting portion being located on the upper part of the poll or head of the ax.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view showing an ax constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view.
A refers to the ax, which is provided with the usual eye B, in which the handle is secured in the usual manner. The head of the an is made solid and is provided with an integral projecting portion 0, which extends above and in the rear of the eye. The blade of the ax is tapered from a point a little in 7 front of the eye, from which the blade is of a uniform thickness, the end forming the bit being beveled to provide the cutting-edge. By this construction as the bit is Worn away or ground it does not become thickened. The poll or head is provided with an upwardly-projectin g portion 0, which is located above the upper edge of the ax and in the rear of the eye. This projecting portion counterbalances the blade by providing an equal amount of weight on each side of the eye, so as to counterbalance the depending portion of the blade. In practice this construction of blade provides an ax which when in use imparts but little or no jar to the users hands.
The improvement hereinbefore described may be applied to axeshaving double bits.
' Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, an ax, the poll or head having an upwardly-extending portion located in the rear of the eye of the ax and projecting above the upper portion of said eye and upper edge of the blade, said poll or head being of approximately the same Weight as the blade or portion of the ax in front of the eye thereof, substantially as shown.
