Description

(No Model.)
W. MOMASTER. SASH FASTENER.
I I l 1 Q l 3 WITNESSES:
INVENTOI? Patented Dee. 29, 1891.
' UNITED STAT-Es PATENT OFFICE RUFUS W. MCMASTER, or BUFFALO, MISSOURI.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,253, dated December 29, 1891.
Application filed March 9, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUS W. MoMAsTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Dallas and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in a new. and improved sash-lock which is very simple. in its constructionand can therefore be manufactured and put on the market at a small cost, and is exceedingly convenient and effective in its operation; and my invention will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view showing a sash locked by the device. Fig. 2 illustrates in detail the lock proper. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the recessed sash-plate.
The same numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the several parts by their designating-numerals, 1 indicates asmall thimble or barrel, the exterior of which is round, so that it will fit in an auger-hole 2, bored in the window-casing either at the right or left hand side of the window. The outer end of the barrel is preferably formed with the opposite flat blades 3 3, which extend out radially and have their inner ends and outer edges sharpened, so that they will readily penetrate into round auger-hole in which it fits.
the wood of the window-casing as the barrel 1 is pushed into the opening 2, and which will serve to prevent the barrel turning in the Through, the barrel is formed a longitudinal opening 4, rectangular in cross-section, in which the locking-bolt 5 fits and slides. This lockingbolt is rectangular in cross-section and is formed with a central longitudinal slot 7, through which a fixed stop 8 in the barrel passes. A spiral spring 9 is arranged within the slot 7 of the locking-bolt between the stop 8 and the outer end of this bolt and tends to normally press the inner locking end of the bolt inward in engagement with the sash. The innerlockingend of the bolt 5 is formed $erial No. 384,328. (No model.)
at one side with the finger-piece 10, by means of which the spring-actuated bolt is pushed back.
In a suitable recess in the side of the sash .is secured by a screw passing through it the sash-plate 11, which is formed with the recesse's 12 adapted to receive the inner end of the spring-actuated bolt. It will now be seen that by pressing back the locking-bolt against the pressure of its spring its inner end will be freed from the recessed sash-plate l1, and the sash can then be raised or lowered, and when it reaches the desired point the finger-pressure is released and the spiral spring slides the inner end of the bolt into the opposite recess 12 of the sash-plate, thus locking the sash securely. The device can be used either to lock the sash in its closed position or to fasten it at any point to which it may be raised.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my new and improved sash-lock will be readily understood. My sash-lock is adapted to be applied to either side of the window and to either an upper or lower sash. It is very simple in construction and yet exceedingly convenient and effective in its operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sash-fastener, the combination of the cylindrical barrel having the longitudinal R. IV. MOMASTER.
