IMPROVEMENT IN SASH HOLDERS AND FASTENERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [75,978, dated April 11, 1876; application filed February 21, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. HAW- THORN, of Carson City, Ormsby county, State of Nevada, have invented a Window-Sash Stop; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention, without further invention or experiment.

My invention consists in the combination of a screw passing through the window-sash, in combination with a spring having one end secured to the inner surface of the sash, and a slot or slots in the window-facing, whereby I am enabled to combine in one device the functions of an adjustable friction sash-holder and a positive stop or sash-fastener.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a View of a window, showing the appplication of my device; and Fig. 2 is a separate view of the device.

A is a windowcasing, and B O are the upper and lower sashes, which slide in the ordinary manner. Through the side of the sash I make a hole, into which a screw, d, turns, as shown. A spring or plate, 0, is secured to the edge of the sash which lies next the casing, and the point of the screw presses against this plate, one end of which is free. By turning the screw, the plate is pinned outward and, presenting a considerable surface, is cansed to bind and hold the sash firmly at any point. The plate also prevents any marring of the wood, as might occur if the screw only were used. In order to secure the sashes firmly when closed, an inclined slot, '5, is cut into the side of the casing J, and when the sash is closed the plate will be forced into this slot by turning the screw, thus securely looking the sash so that it cannot be opened from the outside. The screw is provided with a thumb-piece or equivalent device.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The screw d and spring-plate 6, having one end secured to the inner surface of the sash, in combination with the sash O and windowfacing J, provided with the inclined slot 6, substantially as set forth.
