Description

W. H. WARD. KRAUT :GUTTER.
(No Model.)
Patented Dec. 15
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM H. WARD, OF NOBLESVILLE, INDIANA.
KRAUT-CUTTE R.
$PEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,007, dated December 15 1891.
Application filed August 6, 1891. Serial No. 401,920. (No model.)
vegetable-cutters.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, strong, and durable vegetable-cutter which will afford ready access to the interior for the purpose of cleaning the blades and thelike, and in which the blades may be readily adjusted to vary the thickness of the slice.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vegetable-cutter constructed in accordance with this invention, the upper section of the back of the frame being removed. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the wheel. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the frame or spider for the cutter-wheel. Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the knives.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a vegetable-cutter frame composed of a front 2, on which is mounted a hopper 3, a back 4, and a band 5, interposed between the front and the back and secured to them by bolts 6 and having its ends arranged ashort distance apart at the bottom of the frame to form a discharge-opening 7. The back 4 of the frame is composed of two sections 8 and 9, the upper one 9 being secured by a hook 10 and being adapted to be readily removed to afiord access to the interior and to enable a cutter-wheel 11 and a shaft 12 to be removed from the frame- The shaft 12 is provided at its rear end with the crank-handle 13 and is journaled in suitable bearings of the frame and carries the cutter-wheel 11. The cutterwheel is composed of a frame or spider 14, having four arms 15, provided with longitudinal openings 16 and asheet-metal disk 17, se-
cured to the frame or spider and provided with radial slots 18, registering with the openings of the frame or spider 14. are secured to the front face of the wheel by bolts 20, arranged at the ends of the blades and also serving to secure the disk to the frame 14. The disk is further secured to the frame by turning the longitudinal edges of the metal at the slots inward and forming flanges 21. The blades are provided at their ends with perforated cars 22 to receive the bolts 20, and the blades are adapted to be turned or sprung longitudinally to vary the thickness of the slice which they cut. The blades are adjusted by set-screws 23, mounted on fulcru ming-fla1'1ges 24, formed integral with the arms of the frame 14 and arranged at the centers of the blades, and when the setscrews, which are arranged in perforations of the blades, draw the rear longitudinal edges inward the cutting-edges are forced outward, thereby increasing the thickness of the slice. WVhen the screws release the blades, the latter spring outward and assume their normal positions. The fulcruming-flanges are curved inward toward the blades and are arranged at the centers of the same.
It will be seen that the vegetable-cutter is simple, strong, and durable, afiords ready access to the interior of the same, that the cutter-wheel may be readily removed for cleaning or sharpening the 'knives, and that the blades may be readily adjusted to vary their cut.
The machine is adapted for cutting cabbage for sauer-kraut, slicing vegetables, and for kindred purposes.
What I claim is-' 1. In a vegetable-cutter, the combination of the frame,a shaft journaled in the-frame, and a cutter-wheel comprising the frame, having the arms provided with longitudinal openings, the sheet-metal disk secured to the frame of the wheel and provided with radial slots arranged opposite said openings, the longitudinal edges of the metal at the slots being turned inward on the frame and forming flanges secured thereto, and the blades arranged opposite the openings, substantially as described.
The blades 19 2. In a cutter-wheel for vegetable-cutters,
