Description
G. W. MADSEN. Bread-Gutter.
No. 210,343. Patented Nov. 26,1878.
I N-PYETERS, FHDTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTUN. B. O
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL W. MADSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BREAD-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,343, dated November 26, 1878 application filed I August 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL WILHELM MAD- sEN, ofChicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bread-Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved bread-cutter. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 8 a side view, of the same.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by similar letters.
This invention appertains to certain improvements in bread-cutters which are adapted also for cutting vegetables, &c., and relates to that class of cutters in which the cutting is performed by a rotating knife, the latter being hung upon an axis operated by a crank or other suitable means.
The nature of this invention consists, first, in the arrangement of the knife or cutter with referenceto a case, so that the latter shall clean the knife each time it is lifted from the article being cut, and also serve to inclose the knife when not in use, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, Arefers to a table, having a rail or guide, a, to assist the hand in guiding the article to be cut to the knife, which severs or slices it, as desired, by grasping and turning its operating crank or handle, to be more fully referred to hereinafter.
B is a case, supported at one end of the table A, in an elevated position,uponaright-angled, preferably Webbed or flanged, upright, b. If desired, one side, a, of the case B may be cast or constructed with the right-angled upright 11, as seen in sectional and front views, and with these a tubular bearing or sleeve,
01, which supports the axis 6 of the knife or cutter, both which axis and knife will be presently more fully elucidated. The side 0 of the case B is provided with an annular flange, 0 to which the other side, 0 of said case is fastened in any known way. The entrance to the case B is just sufficiently wide in practice to receive the knife or cutter presented thereto edgewise, the object of this being to remove any adhering particles of the article being cut from, or to clean the knife each time it is lifted from the article. This case may be made with a series of ornamental perforations, if desired.
C is the knife or cutter proper, preferably constructed somewhat after the shape of a scythe, or in the shape substantially as shown in the drawing, its convex portion being bev- I eled, and forming the cutting-edge. The knife or cutter is hung in the elevated or cut-away portion of the case B upon the axis 0, to which axis is also attached the handle or crank D, or other suitable means for operating or rotating the knife. A nut, f, is fitted upon one end of the axis 6, to hold the latter in its bearing and to tighten the said axis, so as to prevent it from revolving when the knife and handle have been elevated out of the way when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, with the cutter or knife C, handle D, and axis 0, of the case B, constructed as shown and described, for the purpose of cleaning the knife each time it is lifted from the article being cut, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
CARL WILHELM MADSEN.
