To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, RUE L. COUCH, of thecity of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Roofing, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to improvements in metallic roofing, and more especially to the means for uniting the roofing-sheets; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a cross-section through two of the sheets united by cleatsin accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a portion of a rooting sheet, showing a cleat applied thereto; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the cleat.

8 and 12 indicate roofing-sheets, and 16 in die-ates a cleat by means of which they are to be united. The said cleat consists of a piece of sheet metal having a base portion 3 and tongues at and 5, projecting therefrom, the tongue 5 being of about half the width of tongue t and separated from the latter by a slit 0. Tongue 5 projects from the base portion 3 only about half as far as tongue t.

It is my intention to manufacture the roofing-sheets with the cleats secured thereto, as shown in Fig. 2, thus facilitating the operation of placing them in position by the workmen. To accomplish this purpose the cleat is slipped on the edge of the sheet, before either has been bent, in such a manner that the said edge will pass into the slit 6 and the short tongue 5 will lie on the under side of the sheet and the tongue t on the upper side. The edge of the sheet and the cleat are now bent simultaneously by suitable machinery into the form shown in Fig. 2-that is to say, a V-shaped flange 9 is formed on the sheet and the tongues a and 5 conform to the shape of said flange, the base portion 3 remaining in the same plane as the main portion of sheet 8. The end of tongue 4 may now be bent upward, as shown in Fig. 2, and the sheets are ready to be applied to the roof. In performing this last-named operation the sheet 8 is first laid down, and the base pon tions3of the cleats secured thereto are nailed to the roof by nails 15. 'lheV-shaped flange 13 of sheet 12 is now placed over the flange of the sheet just secured, and the tongue 4 is bent over upon said flange, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and the seam is complete.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with a sheet 8 and V- shaped flange of the edge thereof, of a cleat provided with tongues 4 and 5 and a slit between said tongues, the base portion of said cleat being adapted to be secured to the roof, and the tongues 4 and 5 being bent to conform to and to lie upon the upper and under sides of the flange, respectively, and a sheet 12, also provided with a V-sha-ped flange adapted to rest over the flange of the firstmentioned sheet and to be held in position by tongue 4:, which is bent over the same, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a sheet 8 and a V-shaped flange on the edge thereof, of a cleateonsisting of a base portion 3 and tongues t and 5 projecting therefrom, one of which is longer and wider than the other and separated from it by a slit, said base portion being adapted to be secured to the roof and the tongues 4t and 5 being bent to conform to and to lie upon the upper and under sides of the flange, respectively, and a sheet 12, also provided with a V-shaped flange adapted to rest over the flange of the first-mentioned sheet and to be held in posit-ion by tongue 4, which is bent over the same, substantially as described.
