ESPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 326,958, dated September 29, 1885.
Application filed June 29, 1885. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES H. ELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Irnprovements in Metal Roofing; and ldo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the roof, showing the different positions of the several parts. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the cleat or anchor bent ready for use. Fig. 3 is a detached View of the cleat or anchor before it is bent or formed.
The present invention has relation to metal roofing; and its nature consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw logs.
in the accompanying drawings, A represents the metallic sheets of the root" proper, the edges of said sheet being bent or tongued up, as shown in the drawings, the edge on one side of the sheet being tongued about one third higher than the edge upon the opposite side of the sheet. The tongued portion a is provided with the cut-away'portions B, said cut-away portions coming down to the top of the tongued portion b. These cut-away portions are located at intervals along the seam, so that a sufficient number of cleats or anchors can be used to securely hold the metallic sheets A to the root.
The cleat or anchor O is originally formed as shown in Fig. 3, and is then bent or formed as shown in Fig. 2, the space D being for the purpose of fitting over the tongued-up portion a, below the cut-away place B. The space 0 is for the purpose of fitting over the top of the tongued-up portion a, as shown at Z, Fig. 1, the top or upper part of the cleat or anchor being long enough to embrace a portion of the tongued-up portion a upon each side of the cut-away B.
In use the sheet provided with the tonguedup portion a is placedin proper position upon the roof, as shown in Fig. 1, and the cleat or anchor is placed in the position shown at Z, Fig. 1. Said cleat or anchor is then securely attached in any well-known manner to the roof, and the next sheet is placed in the position shown at Z Fig. 1, and the portion of the tongned-up part a, which extends above the tongued-up part I), together with that part of the cleat or anchor which extends above the tongued-up part b, is bent over, as shown at Z, Fig. 1.
It will be seen that by my peculiar manner of bending the cleat or anchor O, lam enabled to lap said cleat or anchor upon both sides of the tonguell-up portion at, below the cutaway part B, and at the same time hook over the top of the tongued-up portion a, thus forming a connection for the two sheets proper that will not be liable to get out of place in bending the cleat or anchor and the upper part of the portion a, as shown at Z, Fig. l.
The object of providing the cut-away portion B is to let the cleat or anchor come down to the bottom of the tongued-up portion a upon the side at which the adjoining sheet is to be placed, and at the same time coming partially down upon the opposite side of the tonguedup portion a, and having the top or T-shapcd portion hooking or lappingover the top of the tongued-up portion a.
It will also be seen that by setting the anchor 0 down in the tongued-up portion a it will be held at the place designed and will not be liable to get out of place should it become detached from the roof.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The cleat or anchor 0, formed substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The sheet A, having the tongued-up portion a, and provided with the cut-away portions B, in combination with the cleats or anchors G, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
