UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID w. D vIs, on DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
CORKSCREW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 455,826, dated July 14, 1891..
Application filed February 15, 1890- Serial No. 340,579. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID W. DAVIS, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corkscrews; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in wire-cutters and cork-pullers, the object of the same being to provide a lever-corkscrew of such construction that the device will be found to possess every detail in connection with an implement of this character to render the same serviceable in every respect, and especially to provide a corkscrew with means for cutting the wire on bottles in connection with means for conveniently removing the cork with but a very slight eftorta feature which is especially desirable and absolutely necessary to a perfectly-equipped implement of this character, as all malt liquors and many grades of wines are provided with wires to better secure the corks from involuntary ejections.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which may be carried in the pocket without inconvenience.
A further object is to provide a corkscrew possessing all the above combined features, which will be simple, economical in construction, and durable and eificient in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is'fully illustrated in a side View thereof.
A represents the handle, and B a wire-cutter pivotally secured in one end thereof, the
same being limited in its upper movement by the shoulder G. The cutter is made of a single piece of metal and is partially concaved, as shown on its under side, and is provided with the arms D, which are provided with pointed ends adapted to fit between the mouth of the bottleand the cork, thereby avoiding all possibility of slipping. The forward or free end of the cutter is' gradually pointed and narrowed until a sharp cuttingedge is formed thereon, and the point is acutely curved, forming a hook, by means of which when inserted in the wires a sudden back-stroke on the handle A of the screw will separate the wire and leave the cork free for the employment of the screw.
E is the corkscrew pivoted near the forward end of the handle A, so that it will leave space for the wire-cutter to clasp when desired.
The rear end of the handle is curved, as shown, for the purpose of guarding the pointed end of the screw. I WVhen in use, the wire-cutter may be employed as a fulcrum. By driving home the screw and resting the arms D on the mouthof the bottle and raising the handle A the cork will be easily removed. It will be readily seen that the wire-cutter is absolutely necessary in a device of this character, for otherwise the corkscrew in every instance where wire is employed to retain the corks a separate instrument would have to be secured for that purpose and render the screw comparatively valueless.
I would have it understood that I do not claim a corkscrew having a lever-handle and operating-spring in connection therewith, a corkscrew pivoted to said handle, and a slotted fulcrum-arm pivoted to one end thereof and having projections; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a corkscrew having a foldable handle, a fulcrumplate consisting of a fiat blade pivoted in one end of the handle, said fulcrum having pointed arms adapted to fit between the mouth of the bottle and the cork, and a pointed and concaved wire-cutter extended therefrom and forming part thereof, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the ing Witnesses.
I DAVID W. DAVIS.
