THOMAS B. ASHFORD, OF KINSTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
TROUSERSHPROTEC'IOFi.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,599, dated March 17, 1891.
Application tiled December 26, 1890. Serial No. 375,804. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. ASHFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kinston, in the county of Lenoir and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Panialoons-Protectors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part oi this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings represents a seetional elevation of my improved protector, showing it applied to the leg of a pair of pantaloons; Fig. 2, adetail plan view of the outer side of the protector; Fig. 3, a detail view of one of the combined brace and fasteners.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective device to be used as a protector for pantaloons, and also a simple means for attaching it thereto which will also serve as a brace or stay for the protector and therebyincrease its durability and usefulness, which objects are attained by the device constructed as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a portion of the leg of a pair of panta loons shown in section and the position of the boot or shoe in relation thereto indicated by dotted lines.
The device which constitutes my invention, and which I term a protectorf is shown at B, and is formed ol' leather, rubber, or any preferred material and of any suitable size and shape best adapted to the purpose for which it is designed-viz., to protect the pantaloons Where they rub against the heel of `the boot or shoe.
In the present instance I have shown the protector with a curved upper edge and a straight lower edge; but such shape may be modified and other forms may be given to the protector Without departing from the principle of my invention.
The protector has connected to it two or more braces or stays C, which are constructed of metal and of sufcient length to extend around both sides ot' the protector to brace central tongue b is passed through the material thereof and the ends of the sheet-metal plate bent around upon and against the oppo- 4site side, and the central tongue above described passed through the slot at one of the ends of vthe metal plate, which securely fastens the braces or stays to the protector.
The tongues a are bent out at right angles to the plane of the protector and passed' through the turned-up portion' c of the panta loons and bent down against the same, as shown in Fig. l, thus securely attaching the protector in place upon the inner side of the -pantaloons at that portion where it would come in contact with the heel of the boot or shoe.
The metal plates above described form a binding for the protector as wellv as a stay and brace, with the additional advantage of a double fastener to secure it to the protector and to attach the protector to the pants.
rlhe tongues of the fastener passing thrpugh the turned-up portion or hem of the pants only, as shown at c, the tongues are entirely concealed from view while the protector materially improves the set of the leg of the pantaloons around the boot or shoe.
The protector herein describedcan be man ufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively small cost, and thereby bring it within the reach of those desiring such an article.
The means employed for rendering the protector strong and durable, and in addition thereto serving as the means of fastening it to the hem ot the pantaloons, enables the article to be most economically produced, while its value and usefulness are retained.
Having now fully described my invention,
IOO
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by l toeter to the pantaloons, substantallyas and ro Letters Patent, sfor the purpose Speeecl.
