No. 408,179. Patented July 30, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JACOB KATZENBERG, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
GARTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,179, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed January 8, 1889. Serial No. 295,764. (No model.)
'scription.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my new and improved garter. Fig. 2 is a detailed top or edge View. Figs. 3 and4= are different views of the clasp, and Fig. 5 is an edge View showing the method of applying the clasp.
The invention willfirst be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents an elastic tape of suitable length to form a garter. The ends of this tape are united by a metal clasp B, applied a short distance from the ends a a, which are thus left free to constitute the bow. The said ends,
which are turned to one side, not only form the bow, but serve to cover and conceal the clasp B. In forming the garter, the ends a a are placed together, as shown in Fig. 5,
| and the clasp B applied and the ends of the clasp struck down with a hammeror other means. The ends a a may be then turned to one side, so that they form the bow and cover the clasp in front, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The clasp is prevented from coming in contact with the stocking by the main portion of the tape, and it is prevented from comin g in contact with the drawers and other under-garments by the ends a a. Byconstructing the garter in this manner the same is very cheap, practical, and serviceable, and all danger of ripping apart is obviated.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a garter composed of an elastic tape A, having its ends united by a metal clasp B, applied to the tape a short distance from its extremities, the ends being left free to form the bowpieces a a, which cover the clasp atthe front, substantially as described.
