COMBINATION-PLOW.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,414, dated March 1'7, 1891. Application filed July 8, 1890- Serial No. 358,082. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chapel Hill, in the county of WVashington and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Combination-Plow, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to a combination-plow, the objects being to provide a plow having interchangeable parts, whereby the same may be used as a double-foot plow, a middle-breaking plow adapted for deep and shallow running, and a sweep-stock.

\Vith the above objects in View the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a plow constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being adapted Fig. 2 is a similar View, the same being shown as a double-foot. Fig. 3 is a similar View, the same shown as a sweep-stock. Fig. 4. is a detail in perspective of one of the double-foot or plow standards. Fig. 5 isadetail in perspective of the runner employed when used as a sweepstock. Fig. 6 isalongitudinal section of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a transverse section. Fig. 8 is a detail in perspective of the locking-plate.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

1 designates the plow stock or beam, provided at its front end with the usual clevis and at its opposite sides with the handles 2, rearwardly disposed and supported above the stock or beam by inclined straps or braces 3. A pair of bolt-openings 4 is formed near the rear end of the beam and, as shown in Fig. 1, through the front one of the pair is passed a bolt 5,'which also passes through the upper end of a pair of depending standards 6, the lower extremities of said standards being located at opposite sides of a plow-shoe 7, to which it is bolted bya transverse bolt 8, said shoe terminating in front of the standard in a point 0. In rear of the standard (5 the stock is provided with a recess 10, under which is secured a plate 11, provided with a slot 12, registering with the recess.

13 designates a diagonal brace adjustably connected between the opposite sections 6 of the plow-standards by means of a set-bolt 14C. The upper rear edge of the brace is provided with a series of teeth 15, which take against the rear end of the slot in the plate, and the bolt 5, acting as a pivot, it is apparent that the standard 6 may be swung to the front or to the rear, as desired, and in accordance with the location of the notch 15, which engages the edge of the slot. A button 16 is pivoted to the underside of the plate, and is provided with a locking-shoulder 17, which is thrown against the front edge of the inclinedbrace after the teeth are in engagement, whereby said brace is locked against withdrawal from the plate. The bolt 14 not only passes through the lower end of the brace 13, but also through the upper ends of a pair of downwardly-disposed diagonal braces 17, the lower ends of which are chamfered or cut away, as shown, and rest squarely upon the upper edge of the shoe 7.

18 designates a mold-board, the lower edge of which is notched, as at 19, to receive the upper edge of the shoe 7, and through said mold-board and between the sections forming the standards 6 is passed a set-bolt 20.

From the above construction it will be ap parent that I have provided a modern style of 8a break-plow, the standards of which may be adjusted and by a loosening of the bolt 8 the shoe itself may be adjusted,the brace 17 acting to maintain the heel of the shoe against upward movement.

To transform the plow into what is known as a double shovel, the standard 6 and its adjuncts are all removed, and through the openings & are passed transverse bolts 21. The bolts 21 pass through not only the holes 90 l, but also an opening 22, formed in the upper ends of a pair of inclined plow-standards 23, which standards carry at their lower ends shovels 24. The opposite ends of the bolts pass through blocks 25, and are provided with 9 5 binding-nuts 26, whereby the beam 1, standards 23, and the blocks 25 are all rigidly bound in position. As before stated, a shovelbeam is located at both sides of the stock or beam 1, so that the shovels are out of line me with each other and adapted for cultivation between rows. Each of the standards has openings 27, and the two standards are connected by means of a crooked bar 28, whereby:

they are maintained in parallelism.

To convert the plow into a sweep-stock plow, the standards 6 and the inclined braces 13 and 17 are retained in position, the same as described in Fig. 1. The shoe 7 and its point 8, together with the mold-board 18, are, 'however, removed, and in lieu thereof there is inserted between the lower ends of the standards 6 a sweep-stock 30, provided at its front end with a transverse bolt-opening 3l,throug"h which the bolt 8 passes. An ordinary shovel 32 is secured in advance of the sweep-stock by means of the set-bolt 20.

From the above it will be apparent that I have provided a plow adapted to be converted into the several and usually independent forms of plows adapted for the different kinds of cultivation of the soil, which plow,- together with its attachments, is cheap and economical, and readily adjusted in the same manner as are plows of the modern style and of the several Classes.

Having described my invention what I claim is In a plow, the combination, with the beam provided near its rear end with a slot, of a slotted plate thereunder, a pivoted button 16, secured at one side of the slotted plate, the depending" standards 6, the shoe 7 the moldboard, and the inclined brace 13, secured to the standards and toothed to engage the edge of the slot and bound against and locked by the button, substantially as specified.
