MELVIN NE\VTON LOVELL, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
JOURNAL-BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,492, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed December 22, 1890. Serial No. 375,465. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MELVIN NEWTON Lov- ELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Journal-Bearings for ClOtlleS-VIIII gers and other Roller-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to journal-bearings which are applicable to roller-expressing machines, such as clothes-wringers, for example; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
My device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, as follows:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a fragment of a clothes-wringingmachine, theline of section being along the axis of the expressingrolls and shows my improved journal-bearings applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, in the same direction as in Fig. 1, of a part of one of the journal-boxes. Fig. 3 is a side elevation view of the part shown in Fig. 2.
Letters of reference indicate parts as follows:
A marks the upright post of a clotheswringer; B, thetop cross-piece; O O, the springbars; 0, the tension-screw; D D,the rolls; E E, the shafts of the rolls; F, thejournal-boxes.
The above-named parts, with the exception of the journal-boxes, are made as commonly, or may be of any constructiondesired, and form no part of my invention.
The construction of the journal-box is as follows: A plain cylindrical case G is formed of a section of tubing finished smooth and even on its inner wall and with such finish on its outer walls as may be desired. Within this case in the annular space between the shaft and the inner wall of the case are as many rollers II as will fill that space properly.
The case G is then embraced by a clamp F F, which is adapted to be held by the framework of the machine. The outer form of the clamp, which may also be said to be the body of the journal-box, may be varied to suit the surrounding parts with which it is used. As
the boxes from moving longitudinally on the shafts and at the same time allows them to move vertically when necessary. It the posts A were provided with tongues in place of the grooves a, then the body of the boxes F should be provided with grooves in place of the tongues f Any other change of form of the exterior of the body of the boxes which may be necessary or desirable to adapt the same to the frame-work of the machine may be given them without departing from my invention.
The essential features of the construction of the body or clamp F F are that it be in two parts, which are secured together by bolts, screws, orrivets, and that the said parts extend over and embrace the ends of the case or barrel G and hold the rollers H in place within the barrel. To this end the clamp or body is made of two parts F F, each of which has a flange F which is annular in form and of such size as to cover the ends of the barrel or cylinder G, and on the inner side of these flanges there is an annular rib f which enters the ends of the barrel G and approaches closely to the ends of the rollers H. The upper part of the clamp-sections arch over the barrel and form a coping therefor, and then terminate in a head or seat for the spring-bars O to rest on when desired. The two parts F F are shown secured together by the rivets or bolts f.
lVhile my improved journal-box is shown as applied to a roller-expressing machine, I do not intend to be limited to sucha use.
I am aware that roller-bearings have been made heretofore in which there was a cylinder or barrel containing the rollers with caps over the ends of the cylinder to hold the rollers in place, and I do not intend to be understood as claiming that feature broadly. In the former constructions just referred to the caps were not connected with a clamp, as are the flanges F of my construction, and the boxes so formed were not adapted to the purposes for which the boxes I show are intended, as expressed in the foregoing description.
\Vhat I claim as new is- 1. The combination, for the purposes named, of the cylinder G, the rollers l-I, contained within said cylinder, and the box F, formed of the two parts 1 F, bolted together as shown, and thus forming a clamp, and having; flanges F which embrace the ends of said cylinder and retain the rollers II therein.
2. The combination, for the purposes named, of the cylinder G, the rollers II, contained within said cylinder, and the box F, formed
