JOURNAL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,627, dated May 18, 1880.
Application filed March 1, 1880.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, AARON HIGLEY, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved J ournal-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof.
This invention relates to a journal-box for lines of shaftin g. Said box consists of a case suspended on pivots in a bracket or hanger,
as the position of the line of shafting may require. Within the case alluded to is an arrangement of anti-friction interlapping rollers upon which the journals of the shafting have I5 their bearings, substantially as hereinafter more fully described, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an end View of the journal-box. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the inside. Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.
As shown in the drawings, A represents the case above referred to, which may be of the shape shown, or a modification of the same, to adapt it to any peculiar place or circumstance. B is a cap fitted to the top of the ease, and secured thereto by the screw-bolts O. From 0 each side of the case projects a lug, D, whereby it is suspended in the frame E and vibrated thereon, for a purpose presently shown.

Within the said case is a pair of rollers, G, the shaft H of which has its hearings in the ends I of the case. The journals or ends of the shaft are covered by caps J, which are an integral part of the case, forming, in connection therewith, oil-chambers a, into which the ends of the shaft project, as seen in Fig. 4.
It will be observed in said Fig. 4 that the rollers G are placed, respectively, near each end of the shaft, leavingaspace between them. K is a roller, the shaft L of which has its hearings in the ends of the case, in like man- (Model.
ner as the shaft H. The roller K is adjusted to revolve between the rollers G, thereby forming interlapping rollers, substantially as shown in the drawings.
The practical application of the above-described journal-box for the purpose specified is as follows: The frame E, with the case of rollers, is placed in and secured to hangers upon which the line of shafting is to be suspended; or it may be secured in any other place or position, as the shaft or shafting to be supported may determine. The journals of the shaft are then laid upon the rollers, as seen in Fig. 1,in which M represents a transverse section of a shaft or journal thereof resting upon the faces of the interlapping rollers, and secured in place thereon by the cap B, as shown in Figs.
2 and 3. In Fig. 4 the dotted lines indicate the position of the shaft longitudinally.
It will be obvious, from the interlapping position of the rollers in respect to each other, that the journal resting thereon is not liable to become deflected laterally from a rightliue, and in the event there should be a slight deflection of the shaft it can be adjusted in line again by the adjusting-screws F. Should the shafting become depressed from a horizontal line the vibratory movement of the box will accommodate itself to such depression and prevent undue strain upon the bearings of the shafts and excessive wearing of the same.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with the inter-lapping rollers K and G, of the case or box A, provided with lugs or trunnions on which itis suspended and vibrated in the frame or standards E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the interlapping rollers K and G, of the vibratory case or box A, the frame E, and adjusting-screws F, as described, and for the purpose specified.
