Be it known that I, MOSES N. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tellington, in the county of Sumner and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Cooking-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to an attachment for grates of cooking-stoves, the objects of the invention being to provide an attachment or supplemental grate designed to be mounted within the grate proper and to be adjusted to or from the bottom of the grate or the top of the stove7 whereby the space between the supplemental grate and the top of the stove may be decreased, whereby the burning of such fuel as corn-cobs soaked in oil, and, in fact,` other kinds of fuel, is facilitated and a proper amount of heat secured for cooking purposes without an undue expenditure of fuel. In other words, to 'adapt the stove to perform its proper functions with a lesser amount of fuel than heretofore by the employment of the ordinary grate, and to adapt the supplemental grate to such adjustment as the kind of fuel and the occasion may demand.

With the above objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a stove of ordinary construction provided with a grate attachment constructed in accordance with my invention, the wall of the stove being broken away to expose the same. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail in perspective of the grate attachment. lFigs. 3, fi, and 5 are end elevations illustrating` the different adjustments secured by the supportingblocks. Fig. 6 is a transverse section through the grate and one of the supporting-blocks. Fig. 7 is a detail in perspective of one of the supporting-blocks- Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

rllhe described grate-frame is simply one of the many forms that may be employed, and I do not limit my invention thereto.

5 represents supporting-frames, which are of oblong shape, and each has one side provided with a bolt-opening 6 and one end provided with a bolt-opening '7, both of which openings are adapted to register with boltopenings 8, formed in the end of the grateframe. Two of these frames are employed, one at each end of the grate-frame, and they are secured'in position by means of ordinary bolts 9 or other fastening devices.

The supplemental grate is designed to lit loosely within the fire-box of the stove, and by means of the grate-supporting frame previously described said supplemental grate is supported in an elevated manner within said fire-box, so that it is brought nearer to the top of the stove than the original grate.

By reason of the supporting-frames being formed oblong it will be observed that l secure three adjustments for the supplemental grate-namely the lowest adjustment by means of setting the frames horizontally upon the grate of the stove-that is, the long sides l1orizontal--the intermediate adjustment by setting them sidewise-that is, iiat-the opposite edges being adjacent to the grates, and the highest adjustment by setting them endwise-that is, with the longitudinal sides vertically disposed so that the supplemental grate is brought toward the top of the stove, and therefore designed for a smaller amount of fuel and for radiating a greater amount of heat than when set low down.

As one of the many means for adjusting the supplemental grate I may employ the suspension-rod 12, passed upwardly through the four corners of the grateframe and through openings in the top of the stove, as shown by dotted. lines in Figs. 1 and 2, the ends of the rods above the top of the stove being provided with ordinary taps or adjust ing-nuts 13, by which an adjustment is secured, as will be apparent. In this marinera stove is especially adapted for use in summer and for the burning of such light fuel as wood, cobs soaked in oil, &c., and to radiate to the top of the stove the necessary heat for cook- IOS ing purposes without having a big bed of re calculated to last long after the operation of Cookin g has been Iinished.

Vhen the grate is employed for the burning of oil-soaked cobs, an imperforate pan 13 is used. This pan aets to shut off the draft and to catch and oolleet all drippin gs.

If desired, I also employ a pair of spacebolts 14, connecting the supporting-frames With the fire back of the fire-box, and by the same I am enabled to force the supplemental grate snugly against the front Wall of the fireboX and maintain the same in position.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- I. The combination, with the supplemental gratesframe having bolt-openings, of oblong grate-supporting frames provided at their upper ends and side portions with bolt-holes adapted to register Witlrbolt-holes formed in the grate, and bolts for insertion in the holes, substantially as specified.

The herein-described grate attachment, consisting of an oblong frame, a series of transverse grate-bars the extremities of which 2 5 are upwardly bent, and a series of short bars forming a continuation of the bent ends of the transverse bars and secured to the end bars of the grate-frame, substantially as specified.
