Description

J. HILL;
Adjustable Percolator.
' Patented Sept. 20, 1864.
Fay; I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
J. Q. HILL, OF \VOROESTEB, MASSACHUSETTS.
iMPROVED ADJUSTABLE PERCOLATOR.
Sp ecificatiou forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,3 1 l, dated September 20, 1864.
T0 or whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. Q. HILL, of the city and county of \Vorcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Percolators; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of my improved percolator after it has been applied to a funnel for practical use, and Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of my improved 1 ercolator.
In the drawings, A represents an ordinary funnel with my improved percolator applied thereto, both being shown in sections.
B represents the top of my percolator, which in this instance is perforated with holes a a. The top or supporting part B has combined therewith a series of downwardly-projecting flanges, b b, which in this instance are separated by the peculiar openings 0 0. These flanges are designed for a twofold purposeiz., to enable the operator to adjust the percolator to any taper of funnel, and also to retain the percolator in place whilein use. The flanges b may be made concave as seen at d, or they can be corrugated. In those cases where a perforated diaphragm is used in combination with a funnel there is constant danger of the diaphragm turning to one side, thereby interrupting the operation and oftentimes requiring the whole operation to be gone over again.
By the use of my invention all of these objections are obviated. Again, much valuable time is saved in the preparation of the various tinctures, owing to the ease and facility with which my percolator can be adjusted to the taper of any funnel that may happen to be at hand.
If preferred, the central or perforated part of my percolator can be made separate from the supporting or rim part B and the flanges a. In such case the operator could use diaphragms having ditterent-sized perforations or having a greater or less number thereof.
When the diaphragm forms a part of the device or is made from the same metal or material, as indicated in the drawings, false or duplicate diaphragms may be used on top of the device, such false diaphragms having such number and sized perforations as to suit the particular occasion.
The flanges I), being yielding or flexible, can be, as before stated, bent or curved to fit any degree of taper in the funnel, whereby the device, when inserted in the funnel, is never in danger of turning to one side, but will always remain in its proper position, the flanges giving a proper support to the supporting part B and its diaphragm.
My invention has been subjected to practical test, and has met with the most unqualified approval. It provides a cheap, simple, and effective means of obtaining tinctures, both by the apotheeary and physician.
Having described my improved percolator, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a supporting rim or part, B, with adjustable or flexible flanges b and a perforated diaphragm, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the supporting part B with a series of flanged supports, for the purposes set forth.
