UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES XV. SCHAEFER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
CHALK-SHARPENER, CHALK-DUST COLLECTOR, AND WEIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,008, dated December 16, 1&90.
Application filed fieptembei- 15, 1890- Serial No. 365,040. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. SCHAEFER, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Chalk- Sharpener, Chalk-Dust Collector, and Veight; and I do hereby declarethe following to be at'ull, clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a combined chalksharpener, box, and weight as an article of manufacture, that is more especially adapted to be used in merchant-tailoring establishments, furrieries, &c. In such establishments a vast deal of chalk is used in marking the cloth or goods preparatory to cutting, and also in fitting the garments to the wearer.
' The chalk, by reason of its soft and highly disintegrable properties, requires frequent sharpening, and heretofore in such establishments the want of a suitable chalk-sharpener caused great lllOOilVGl'llQllCG and it was difl'h cult to keep the work-table and work free from chalk-dust, causing much annoyance; also, in such establishments weights are employed to hold the work in place on the worktable. I have therefore devised the combined chalk-sharpener, chalk-dust collector, and weight, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 00 a", Figs. 1 and 9. Fig. 4. is a bottom plan of the cover of the box or chalk-dust collector. Fig. 5 is a plan of the box with the cover removed.
A represents a case or box, preferably circular in plan, as shown. Box A has two or more inwardly-projecting flanges (1. These flanges are approximately of a circular-arc form, (see Fig. 5,) and are undercut, as shown more clearly at a in Fig. 3.
B represents the cover of the box. The
cover has depending flanges b, the latter bein g correspondingly shaped to snugly fit the undercut portion of flanges a of box A, as shown in Fig.
In applying the cover to the box the former is placed on the latter with its depending flanges between the flanges of the box, and then the cover is given a turn in one direction or the other, thus locking the same to the box.
The cover has a slot C, contracted at its ends for receiving with a tight fit the ends (Z of a cutter D, the cutting-edge of the latter extending slightly above the upper surface of the cover, as shown in Fig. 2.
In using the cutter the chalkdust or particles of chalk liberated in sharpening the chalk are deposited in the box below, slot C in the cover being ample in size to afford free ingress to such particles or chalk-dust, and when it becomes advisable to empty the box this can readily be done by separating the cover and box in giving either a turn in the one direction or the other.
The cover and box are usually made of metal, so that the device will be sufficiently heavy to answer the purpose of a weight, and to this end the cover is also provided with a handle or knob B.
The device is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive, and it is believed will supply a long-felt desidera-tum of merchant tailors, furriers, (be.
hat I claim is As an article of manufacture, a combined chalk sharpener, chalkdust collector, and Weight, the same comprising a case or box and cover, the latter having depending flanges adapted to take under flanges on the box and provided with a slot having a cutter extending centrally over it in such a manner that the particles liberated bySharpening thechalk will be deposited on each side of the cutter, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two Witnesses, this 28th day of August, 1890.
CHARLES W. SCl-IAEFER.
