Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. BISHOP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cots or Lounges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in sleeping cots or lounges.

The object of my invention is to provide a folding cot which will be strong, serviceable, and cheap, at the same time be compact and simple, occupying small space when not in use.

I'Ieretofore cots have been made with long side rails, to which the canvas bed was permanently fastened. Besides being unwieldy, the canvas could not be removed for cleansing.

Figure l is a perspective view of the complete invention. Fig. 2 are detail views ot the several parts.

In the drawings like letters indicate like parts.

A A are two side rails or sills of suitable and equal dimensions. Near each of the several ends these sills are provided with holes a a and stop-blocks a ct', or cleats with inclined lower edges are placed at the several ends of the rails, as shown in the drawings.

B B are four arms made in a proper shape and of equal dimensions. Each of these arms is provided with holes l1 b in one end, and the ogee opening or curved groove b b in each of the other ends. as shown in the drawings. There are also four legs O U of exactly similar size and shape. These are provided with holes o c near the upper ends. There are two rounds D I), which have round tenons (l d on their ends. At or near the outer en ds of the tenons are key holes or seats d d.

E E are two rollers of suitable length provided with grooves e e near their outer ends.

F F are four hooks or stays of suitable length provided with an eye f at one end, the other end being bent at right angles, as shown at f. On this hook f is fit-ted a band of india-rubber f2.

G G is the canvas orbed, folds or loops g g being made at either end securely sewed or woven in.

To put the cot together for use, the tenons d CZ of rounds D D are inserted first in the holes of the legs C C and then the holes a a of sills A A; then through the similar holes b b of the arms B B. The keys d2 are then inserted in the key-seats CZ in the tenons d d. The keys are driven down suihciently to hold this frame stiff. The rollers E E are put through the loops of the canvas and dropped in the openings h b in the arms B B. The hooks F having been secured by a screw through eye f to the arns B B, the lower ends, which havebeen incased in rubber, will drop under the legs C C, which are drawn up, and come in contact with the stop-blocks on the ends of the rails. Now by pressing down the outer ends of the arms B B the canvas is drawn taut. The hooks F will gradually drop down the legs C C, which are prevented from being drawn up by the blocks d. The rubber in which they are incased will prevent their slipping, thus securing the canvas in horizontal position, taut and secure. By loosening the hooks the legs and arms B maybe folded up parallel with the side bars A.

I am aware that many minor changes in the construction and arrangementof the parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from theJ nature and principle ot my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a ncot, the combination of the frame having upwardly-extending inclined end bars formed with notches in their upper under sides, cross-bars located in the notches, and a canvas having two or more loops arranged at different distances from its ends, through which the cross-bars pass, substantially as described.
