W. BEAMS. COMBINED TABLE, BASEL, AND WRITING DESK.
No. 439,186. Patented Oct. 28, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BEAMS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED TABLE, EASEL, AND WRITING-DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,186, dated October 28, 1890. Application filed June 25, 1890. Serial No. 356,651. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BEAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania; have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Table, Easel, and Writing-Desk; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved combined table, easel, and writing-desk; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved combination-table, which is constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing? the same adjusted to be used as an ordinary table. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same adjusted to be used as a writing-desk. Fig. 3 shows the same in position as an easel. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing my improvement folded to occupy but a small space.
To put my invention into practice, I provide a suitable top a, having arranged along the front edge thereof a hinged piece I), which when partially revolved aboutits pivotal point 0, and held in that position by a sliding stop d, (see Fig. 2,) acts as an obstruction and will prevent paper and other articles from sliding off when the article is used' as a Writing desk. This hinged piece I) may be revolved to occupy a position at right angles to the surface of the top a, (see Fig. 3,) which will be the case when the article is used as an easel.
Secured or pivoted beneath the top a is a toggle-connection, consisting of three bars, one of which e is pivoted to the under side of the top a and the other two extremities f f to the tops of the legs g. One of these legs g at each side of the table is connected to a slide'link h, secured beneath the lid a in a manner'that the same may move in the direc tion of its length when adjusting the article into its various forms. These legs g are crossed and suitably pivoted to a cross-bar "i, so that the same may be folded together to occupy a small space.
Attached to the front cross-bar lo and placed over the rear cross-bar Z is a cord m, which is used for the purpose of folding or drawing the legs 9 together.
To adjust the article from a table, as shown at Fig. 1, to a desk, as shown at Fig. 2, the lid 0 is elevated to a slightly-inclined posit-ion by elevating the lower links f of the toggle, which brings the legs g slightly together, and by attaching the loose end of the cord m to the cross-bar Z the toggle-links f are held in that position. The hinged piece 17 is slightly revolved about its pivotal point 0 and the sliding piece d moved beneath the same.
The operation for converting the article into an easel is analogous with that described for the desk.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of the top, two pairs of crossed legs, one leg of each pair being pivoted to the top, and the toggle-joint consisting of three links, two of said links being connected to the legs and the third being pivoted to the table-top, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the top, two pairs of crossed legs, the slide h, through which the connecting-bar of one of each pair of crossed legs passes, and the toggle-joint having two of its members f f pivoted to the legs, the third member being pivotally connected to the top, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 25th day of April, A. D. 1890.
' WVILLIAM BEAMS. [L. s.]
In presence of M. E. HARRISON, C. 0. LEE.
