VEHICLE-POLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,153, dated October 28, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ACOB HOC-KMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesborough, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle -Poles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to vehicle-poles which are provided with an extension-piece for increasing their length; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts whereby the separable portion of the pole may be quickly coupled and uncoupled from the main portion.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of portions of a pole and its extension-piece, showing the novel coupling devices. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same from above with the extension-piece removed.
A is the short pole, which may be attached to the vehicle in any approved manner.
B is a socket secured to the front end of pole A by bolts or rivets a. The socket B is provided with the inclined end b and the projecting tongue 0 at the bottom of said inclined'end. The tongue 0 is provided with the hole or slot 0, and forms the draft attachment for the vehicle when the short pole alone is used.
D is the extension-piece,provided with the socket E, which is secured to its rear end by bolts or rivets e. The socket E is provided with the inclined end 6, and the projecting tongue F at the top of said inclined end having the pocket fformed in it. The two inclined sockets are adapted to be coupled together, and one of them is provided with the longitudinal rib g upon its inclined face,which rib fits into a corresponding groove in the other socket and keeps the two sockets in line with each other.
G is a hook, which projects from the under side of socket E and engages with the hole 0 of tongue 0. The two sockets may be secured together by one or more bolts passing vertically through them; but in order that the disconnection of the extension-piece may be more quickly efiected it is preferable to use the 1011- gitudinally-sliding catch H.
I I are lugs upon the socket B, and h are guide-holes in said lugs for the catch H to slide in. The two sockets are locked and unlocked by merely sliding the longitudinal catch in and out of the pocket f.
J is an arm secured to the catch H, and j is a forked lever pivoted to the lug I by the pin a.
J is alink pivotally connected to the forked lever j and to the arm J by means of the pins 11. When the sockets'are connected together, the lever j rests upon the lug I, andits weight prevents the catch from working back out of the pocket. The sockets are unlocked by turning the lever in the direction of the arrow, thereby withdrawing the catch from the pocket.
What I claim is 1. The combination, with the short pole and the socket secured thereto and provided with an inclinedend anda projecting tongue forming its draft attachment, of an extension-piece, the socket secured to said extension -piece and provided with an inclined end and a projecting tongue, one of the said sockets being provided with a projecting rib upon its inclined end engaging with a corresponding groove in the inclined end of the other socket, and coupling devices for detachably connecting the said two sockets, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the short pole and its socket, provided with an inclined end and a perforated projecting tongue, of the extension-piece and its socket, provided with an inclined end, a hook engaging with the hole in the said tongue, a pocket at its upper end, and a longitudinally-sliding catch supported in lugs on the short-pole socket and adapted to engage with the said pocket and to lock the two sockets together, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination,with the short pole and its socket, provided with an inclined end and a perforated projecting tongue, of the extension-piece and its socket, provided with an inclined end, a hook engaging with the hole in the said tongue, a pocket at its upper end, a longitudinally-sliding catch supported In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
