ArnNr CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 30,030, dated June 10, 1884.
To @ZZ whom t 77cm/ concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT M. SrUReis, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Charleston, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Automatic Car-Coupling, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to car-couplings; and it has for its objectto provide a device of this character for automatically coupling the cars which shall be simple in its construction and operation and durable in its use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a coupling whereby cars of different heights may be readily coupled without any necessity of adjustment of the parts.
Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims'.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ear-coupling constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, showing the cars coupled; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the latch or hook.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters referto corresponding parts in the several iigures, A represents a drawhead, which is divided for about half its length, forming an upper and a lower portion, c a', the front ends of which are beveled both upon their upper and lower sides, as shown. The upper and lower portions, aand a, are provided with a vertical slot, b, of different diameters, said slot b extending rearwardly into the draw-head. Within this slotted portion of the draw-head is pivoted the coupling latch or hook, which consists of a body portion, d, having the two arms e, provi/ded at their forward ends with depending hooks c. 'Upon the upper side of the coupling hook or latch is provided a bail7 f, to which is loosely attached a loop of a double lever, E. IThis lever E is provided at its ends with downwardlyextending handles, and is pivoted on the-upper side of the draw-head by means of staples g. A chain may also be attached to the bail 5o f, and connected at its other end to a suitable lever arranged upon the upper end of the car,
Application filed April 524, '1884. (No model.)
whereby the cars may be uncoupled from such y point.
In operation the opposite car, which is equipped with a similar draw-head and coup! with. VTo uncouple the cars, it is only necessary to operate one of the levers, which raises the coupling-hook to which it is attached, and said coupling-hook bears against the under side of the hook of the adjacent car and raises the same from engagement.
It will be seen that a car-coupling constructed in accordance with my invention is simple in its construction, yet thoroughly effective and positive in its operation. It will be further seen that there areno springs to become broken or out of order, and that a free movement is allowed in turning curves, thus obviating any liability to breakage.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a car-coupling, the combination, with a draw-head having an opening to receive a portion of the opposite draw-head, of a coupling hook orlateh pivoted therein, and consisting cfa body portion having an arm or arms provided with a hook or hooks, substantially as set forth.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination, with a draw-head divided into an upper and lower portion, as shown, and having a longitudinal opening, as shown, of a coupling-hook pivoted in said opening, said coupling-hook con- Y sistin g of a body portion having two forwardlyextending arms provided with hooks, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a draw-head divided into an upper and lower portion,4 as shown, having their forward ends beveled on their upper and lower sides, and having a longitudinal opening, as shown, of a couplinghook pivoted in said opening, said couplinghook consisting of a body portion having two forwardly extending arms provided with hooks, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a draw-head di- IOO vided into an upper and lower portion, as In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 1o shown, having their forward ends beveled on my own I have hereto affixed my signature in their upper and lower sides7 and having et lonpresenee of two witnesses.
gitudinztl opening, of :t coupling-hook pivoted in said opening, said eoupiinghook consisting HERBERT M. STURGIS.
A of :t body portion having two forwardly-eze i tending arms provided with hooks, and t Witnesses: double lever pivotally secured to said hook, J. E. BOWMAN, substantially as set forth. S. A. BOWMAN.
