Be it known that I, WEsLEY T. WILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Slat Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a bed-slat lock for securing the bed-slats to the side rails of bedsteads, and my object is to construct a bedslat lock which by reason of its simplicity, cheapness, and utility will be of use to persons requiring such articles; and the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein I Figure 1 is a perspective of a portion of a bed side rail, with one part of my device secured in position; Fig. 2, a perspective of a portion of a bed-slat with the corresponding part of my device secured in position, and Fig. 3 a perspective of my improved bed-slat lock detached.

A represents a portion of a bed side rail, having the usual cleat A secured to the inside thereof, near the lower edge, for supportin g the bed-slats.

B represents a portion of a bed-slat, C a metallic plate, having a horizontally-project ing tongue E, preferably having acute-angled corners, as shown, and is provided with countersunk apertures for the screws, by which it is secured to the cleat A in a suitable position for engaging with the corresponding plate D, adapted to be secured to the bed-slat B near the end. PlateI) is provided with a notch F, corresponding in outline to the tongue E, with which it engages when in use. I prefer to make the interior faces of these plates concave and convex, re-- spectively, as shown, both to leave more room for the screws and make a better joint. It is obvious that when the parts thus arranged are adjusted by engaging the tongue E with the slot F the slats and rails are locked together, the rails are prevented from spreading, and lateral movement of the slats is impossible. It is also apparent that it is immaterial which plate is secured to the slat and which to the side rail, the parts being adapted to coact in either relation.

I deem it important that the plates 0 and D lie in the same horizontal plane, so that when locked they will be flush with each other, and no crevices are left for vermin to collect in. The plate D being arranged at a distance from the end of the slat, the lock is completely covered by the slat when locked and concealed from view. The outer edge of the tongue is set flush with the edge of the cleat A, so that the other plate will have a bearing on the cleat.

I claim- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a bed-slat lock consisting of the two flat metallic plates 0 and D, adapted to be secured to the side rails and slats, respectively, of a bedstead in the same horizontal plane, as set forth, and having a dovetailed notch and tenon integral adapted to fit the notch for locking the slats and bed-rails together, sub stantially as described.

In combination with the side rails A and cleats A, having slat-seats, as shown, and the slats B, the flat metallic plates 0 and D, adapted to be secured to the seats andslats, respectively, and to lie in the same horizontal plane, the plate D beingsecured to the slat at a distance from the end thereof, said plates having dovetailed tenon E and slot F, adapted-to the tenon for locking the parts together, as described, and having their adjacent edges substantially in contact, substantially as set forth.
