CARL OSTERMANN, OF BRFMEN, GERMANY.
ADJUSTABLE DRYING-FRAME FOR MATRICES OR MOLDS FOR STEREOTYPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,925, dated September 23, 1890.
Application filed May 26, 1890- Serial No. 353,262. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL OSTERMANN, stereotyper, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Bremen, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adj ustable Drying-Frames for Matrices or Molds for Stereotypes Produced by the Cold Process, of which the following is a specifiation.
My invention relates to adjustable dryingframes in which the matrices or mold-plates of stereotypes produced by the cold process may be clamped.
In stereotyping the process known as the cold process has the advantage over the warm process that the stereotype matrices or dies dry quicker, the originals not requiring to be previously heated. Hence the former is the only process applicable to wood-cuts, which would otherwise, under the action of heat, be liable to split or crack and become useless. In the cold process the drying of the matrices or dies is carried out in iron frames between which the edge of such have hitherto been made rigid-that is to say, unadjustable so that only matrices or mold-plates of corresponding size could be fitted therein. It was therefore necessary either to provide a large number of frames or to make use, when only a large frame was at hand, of suitable plates corresponding to the size of such frame and enabling a small mold-plate to be clamped or fitted in the latter.
The present invention has for its object to provide an adjustable drying-frame in which matrices or dies for stereotypes of any size- 1'. 8., from that of a newspaper to that of the smallest letter-may be clamped or fitted, whereby the work is greatly facilitated and a great economy of material is effected.
To make better understood the nature of my invention I have affixed to the specification two drawings, Figures 1 and 2, showing two modifications of my frames. The frames of both modifications consist of upper and lower parts, between which the mold or die is held. Two of the opposite sides A of the lower frame are provided with pins projecting from their upper surface and entering into corresponding notches in the upper frame 13, and upon the upper ends of the pins are arranged lateral projections a, which, when turned in direction of the inscribed arrow, press against the wedges b and hold down the upper part B B B B, so that the matrix is firmly held between the two parts A A A A and B B B B.
In the modification illustrated in Fig.1 the sides of each part are provided with longitudinal slots in which slide projecting ribs upon the ad joini ng sideswhich fit in theslots. These ribs terminate with screws passing through the slots, and upon the outer ends of which are screwed nuts, which serve to lock together the various parts of the frame when the sides have been adjusted in the slots to the size required.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 2 the parts of the frame may consist of smooth rectangular bars, one end of each of which is furnished with a notch, through which passes and fits the corresponding end of the adjoining side bar, which is fixed in the required position by a set-screw.
In order to alter the size in either direction of the improved frame, the opposite nuts or screws are first loosened and the corresponding bars moved in the grooves in the required direction and the nuts or screws then again tightened.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, I declare that what I claim is- 1. An adjustable drying-frame for matrices for stereotypes, said frame consisting of two parts, with means for clamping them together, and each part of the frame consisting of bars adjustable on each other to increase or diminish the size of the frame, and devices for locking the bars together after adjustment, all substantially as described.
2. An adjustable drying-frame for matrices for stereotypes, said frame consisting of two parts, of which one has notches and the other has pins to enter the notches, with retaining projections and Wedges, and each part of the frame consisting of bars adjustable on each other to increase or diminish the size of the frame, and devices for locking the bars together after adjustment.
3. An adjustable drying-frame for matrices In testimony whereof I have signed my for stereotypes, said frame consisting of two name to this specification in the presence of parts, With means for securing them together, two subscribing Witnesses.
and each part of the frame consisting of four CARL OSTERMANN. 5 slotted bars, with ribs entering the slots of Witnesses:
adjacent bars, and nuts to lock the bars to- N. WETMAN,
gether, all substantially as described. PAUL HARTERS.
