NITED STATES P TENT- OFFICE.
JUDSON E. LOOKE, OF GLASFORD, ILLINOIS.
RUNNING-GEAR- FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,248, dated September 9, 1890.
Application filed March 13, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, J UDSON EMERSON LOCKE, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Glasford, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Running-Gear for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in running-gear for vehiclesn My invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a running-gear for vehicles constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the brake devices being omitted and the pivotal play of the parts being represented in dotted lines.
A refers to the .front axle of the vehicle, which is provided with the usual hounds, tongue, bolster, and reach. The rear ends of the hounds above the reach are connected to each other bya barB, which is curved slightly and corresponds in configuration, though not in size,'with the bar connecting the rear ends of the front hounds. The reach passes beneath the curved bar B, which is supported above the hounds by blocks 19, through which bolts pass, these bolts also connecting to the hounds truss-beams b b, which are arched downwardly and connect with the axle centrally, and at theirforward ends with the projecting ends of the hounds beyond where the tongue is pivoted thereto.
Beneath the bolster is secured a circle-bar C, the forward ends of which are bent downwardly and are bolted to the forward ends of the hounds, while the rear portion is rigidly secured to the center of the transverse beam B. This circle-iron O is provided with a rearwardly-projecting tongue 0', provided with a slot within which plays a sliding block D, said block having a flanged head which lies over the edges of the slot, and a central pornot only rigidly connected to the hounds, but forms a brace, while the rearwardly-extending portion 0 thereof forms a portion of the supplemental reach. The main reach is adj ustable longitudinally in the usual manner by the rear king-bolt, which also passes through perforations in the rear end of the supplemental reach, which passes between plates 6 c, which connect the forward ends ofthe rear hounds to each other. The front and rear bolsters are both provided with wear.- plates.
In this class of wagons, where both axles turn upon the reach, there is a great strain thereon and upon the supplemental reach, and by means of my improved circle-iron and sliding block the parts upon which the strain comes are rendered strong and durable, and the objections previously existing in different styles of construction, having the same objects in view, are overcome.
Vith this style of vehicle I employ abrake, which consists of spring-plates ff, which are rigidly secured to bars F, said bars being provided with projecting pivot-pins which enter'the rear axle and form a fulcrum for the levers F F, so that when said levers are turned in one direction the segmental springbands will engage with the inner faces of the hub-bands, and when said pressure is released will be out of engagement therewith. The long ends of these levers F are connectedby links or straps g g and a center connectingrod G, the end of which suitably engages with a lever or bar J, which is supported by hang ers attached to the under side of the wagon body or bed, one of these hangers, preferably H, being provided with a horizontal slot in which the projecting end of the lever J can move, while the other end of said lever is piv oted to the opposite hanger. The end of the lever J is connected by a bar K to the brakelever, which maybe of ordinary construction. This style of brake is especially applicable to wagons having the hereinbefore-described coupling, as the parts thereof can be carried by the rear hounds, which are rigidly connected to the hind axle.
This invention being simple, and as the construction will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, further description of the parts is deemed unnecessary.
I do not herein claim the brake devices described and illustrated, as the same will form the subject-matter of a separate application for Letters Patent.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. In running-gear for vehicles, the combination of the main reach pivotally attached to the front and rear axles, front hounds, a circle-brace 0, made in a single piece and consisting of a curved portion located above the main reach and hounds and having its forward ends extending above the front axle and secured to the front hounds, as described, and a rearwardly-extending longitudinal portion provided with a slot and form ed integral with the circle-"brace, together with a supplemental reach connected to the rear axle and having a block engaging and playing in the rear slotted portion of the circle-brace, substantially as set forth.
2. In running-gear for vehicles, the C0111- bination of the main reach pivotally attached to the front and adj ustably connected to the rear axle, front hounds, a circle-brace 0, made in a single piece and consisting of a curved portion located above the main reach and hounds and having its forward ends extending above the front axle and secured to thehounds, as described, and a rearwardly extending longitudinal portion provided with a slot and formed integral with the circle-b race, together with a supplemental reach adjustably connected to the rear axle and having a block engaging and playing in the rear slotted portion of the circle-brace, substantially as set forth.
3. In running-gear for vehicles, the combination of the main reach pivotally attached to the front and adj ustably connected to the rear axle, front hounds, a circle-brace C, made in a single piece and consisting of a curved portion located above the main reach and hounds and having its forward ends extending above the front axle and secured to the hounds a rearwardly-extending longitudinal portion provided with a slot and formed integral with the circle-brace, and rear hounds, having a loop, as described, together with a supplemental reach adj ustably connected to the rear axle playing through the loop of the rear hounds and provided with a block engaging and playing in the slot of the rear extended portion, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JUDSON E. LOCKE.
