HARTLEY L. MONROE, OF MARSl-IFIELD, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOIt OF ONE-HALF TO \VANDLE PULVER, OF SAME PLACE.
WAGON-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,371, dated December 23, 1890.
Application filed September 20, 1890. Serial No. 365,642. (No model.) i
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARTLEY L. h/IONROE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Marshfield, in the county of \Vebster and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vagon- Brakes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wagon-brakes.
The object of the invention is to provide a wagon with means whereby the brakes will be held in contact with the wheels when the wagon moves forward to bring the weight of the same upon the tongue; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a wagon, showing myimproved brakeoperating mechanism applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through the line 0 00 a: of Fig. 1.
The running-gear of the wagon is of ordinary construction, and between the hounds, secured to the front axle, is pivoted the tongue A, which is provided with slots a, through 3 5 which passes a horizontal bar I; for connecting the arms of the tongue to the hounds of the running-gear. To the hounds B are rigidly secured eyebolts c c, which carry a bar 0, upon which are pivoted links or levers D,
to the forward ends of these links being perforat-ed for the passage of a bar E, secured by means of eyebolts c to the tongue A. The rear ends of the links or levers D are slotted, as shown at d, and the forward apertures in 4 5 the same may be of larger diameter than the bar E to permit a slight movement thereon.
F refers to a pair of bars, which are flexibly connected by means of rings f to the levers D, the rear ends thereof being flattened 5e and provided with perforations, so that they may be adjustably connected to the inner ends of the brake-levers G, said brake-levers being pivoted upon the running-gear in the usual manner, the outer ends thereof being provided with brake-shoes, as shown. The central extension of the tongue A has a vertical perforation h, through which a pin may be passed for holding the tongue so that the brake mechanism will be held out of an operative position. When such is the case, the pin which passes through the perforation h will contact with the rear portion of the transverse bar I).
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide a brake-operating mechanism for wagons, consisting of a single central bar located above the reach and bifurcated to engage with the brake-levers, the same being attached at its forward end to a slotted plate, through which the kingbolt passed, a link and rock-lever being attached to the tongue, so that when the runing-gear moved forward the brakes, by reason of the movement of the tongue, would be thrown into an operative position, and I do not claim such construction as myinvention, my improvement being designed to provide each brake-lever with an independent coupling-rod, which acts conjointly with independent pivoted levers centrally fulcrumed So on a rod attached to the running-gear, the ends of said rock-levers engaging with the connecting-bars and a bar carried by the wagon-tongue, by which construction when the wagon moves forward the brake will be auto- 8 5 matically thrown upon the rear wheels of the vehicle, and at the same time providing a cheap and effective brake mechanism which can readily be applied to the form of vehicles in common use without in any way cutting said running-gear; and to apply my invention to such a wagon it is only necessary to provide the ends of the hounds with eyebolts such as are shown at cand slot the rear members of the tongue.
By providing the links or rock-levers D with slots (Z and flexibly connecting the rods F thereto I provide for a certain amount of play, which permits the vehicle to be turned without putting the brake upon one of the wheels, as is often the case where a single connecting-bar is used, also by providing the bars F with perforated ends, as shown, the brake mechanism will be operated and prop' erly adjusted with respect to the length of the reach.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a wagon-brake, the combination, with the running-gear comprising front and rear axles and wheels, together with front hounds extending in front of the forward axle, a tongue movably connected to the forward portions of said hounds to play longitudinally, a transverse bar secured permanently to the hounds, slotted links pivoted thereon and engaging a rod carried by the tongue, and parallel longitudinal bars F 1 loosely connected with said links and to the pivoted brake-1e vers of the rear wheels, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a wagon brake adapted to be applied to running-gears of ordinary construction, of a tongue movably connected to the forward portion of the hounds, the tongue being provided with slots a, through which passes a connecting-bar Z), a rod E, carried by eycbolts which are attached to the tongue, rock-levers D, connected thereto and pivotally attached to the hounds, links f, secured to the rear slotted ends of the rocklevers, and parallel bars I F, connecting the rock-levers to the rear ends of the brake-1c- Ycrs, the tongue being provided with a perforation and pin for locking the parts out of an operative position when desired, substantially as set forth.
I11 testimony whereof I aliix my signatu re in presence of two witnesses.
