SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,783, dated. August 5, 1890 Application filed April 29, 1890.

.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ABRAM GREAvEs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bridgewater, in the county of WVindsor and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the. same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of refer ence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in swings.

The object of the invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and effective structure for sup porting a swing in rooms or doorways which can be adjusted to suit different heights of ceilings or doorways, and when attached thereto will not mar or injure the plastering or wood-work; and it consists in providing a board with fixtures to which the swing is attached, said board having a padded surface which contacts with the upper frame-work of the door or with the ceiling, and adjustable uprights for holding and clamping said uprights in position, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

A refers to a board, which is provided on its upper surface with a padding a of felt, rubber, or other suitable material, and on its under side with any suitable fixtures or hooks b, which serve as pivotal connections for the side bars of the swing B, said side bars being, preferably, made up in two parts, so that they can be adjusted to suit different heights of ceilings or doorways. The side bars 0 and c of the swing have perforations and bolts for clamping the parts to each other, while the swing B may be made of any suitable construction.

It will be within the scope of my invention to employ an ordinary rope swing, instead of the side bars herein shown,

C1 The base-section d has a foot and parallel side bars which are perforated at suitable intervals, and between these side pieces the bar 61, having perforations which register with the perforations in the sections (1 The upper end of the bar d is slotted, as shown at e, and through said slot passes a bolt f for clamping adj ustably thereto the upper section d, which has a series of perforations g, and at its upper end a notched head h, within which lies the ends of the board A. By this construction I provide a support in which the larger adjustments can be made by moving the bar d upon the lower section 61 while the finer adjustments can be, made by properly placing the bolt f.

WVhen it is desired to clamp the board A in place, it can be first loosely supported upon the adjustable uprights by moving the bars (1' upon their upper pivots inwardly, sufficient leverage being obtained to securely clamp the board in place, after which the lower pin can be inserted to prevent further movement of the sections d and d 11 p011 each other.

The padding or strips of felt hereinbefore referred to will prevent the ceiling ordoorway being in any manner marred. I

Having thus descriled my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a transverse horizontal board A, having a horizontal strip of padding interposed between it and the ceiling, of blocks h, notched to embrace and retain the board A, said blocks being carried by adjustable uprights, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a board A, having fixtures for supporting a swing and a padded surface, as shown, of the uprights D, made up of the parts d, d, and d adjustable upon each other, the bar (1 serving as a lever, whereby the parts may be clamped in position, so as to support the board A, and maintain themselves in place when combined with a swing, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

3. In combination with a board A, having hooks, bars 0 and c, adjustably secured to each other and forming a support for a swing,
