Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
STACY T. BAUMAN, OF J EFFRIES, PENNSYLVANIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,166, dated June 17, 1890.
Application filed November 29, 1889. Serial No. 331,849. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STACY T. BAUMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at J effries, in the county of Clearfi'eld and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in that class of plows known as bulltongue, and among the objects in view are to provide such a plow with means for increasing its efficiency and life, obviate the necessity of frequent sharpening, and adapt the same for various uses.
lVith the above objects in view the invention consists, broadly, in providing a bulltongue plow-shovel with a removable point, whereby the same may be adjusted as it wears away, thus always presenting a sharp point for use and obviating frequent sharpening, and to adapt the plow for the reception of various styles of points.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a bull-tongue plow provided with a point constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3, a transverse section; Fig. 4, a detail in perspective of the point detached. Fig. 5 is a modified construction of the point, the same being adapted for use as a subsoil-plow.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 represents a plow-standard, and 2 a bulltongue shovel-plow of ordinary construction, and through verticallyopposite openings formed in the plow and standard there are inserted a pair of bolts 3, the front ends of which are provided with rectangular heads 4, and with squared body portions 5, merging at their rear ends into cylindrical threaded shanks 6, which, in rear of the standard through which they project, are provided with binding-bolts 7.
8 represents the plow-point, and thesame is formed with a long tapering point 9, and has its under surface concaved, as at 10, and otherwise shaped to conform to the facial contour of the plow. The under surface of the point is, for about half its length, provided with a T-shaped slot or recess 11, adapted to be introduced longitudinally over the heads 4. of the bolts and securely bound upon the plow by means of the nuts 7. The front edge of the point is in this instance provided with a fin or blade 12, which, like the point itself, tapers toward its lower end and has its advance edge beveled or sharpened, as at 13.
From the above it is apparent that as the point wears it may be adjusted down upon the plow, so that a new or sharp point is al ways presented for use, and all grinding is avoided, and when so far worn as to become useless the point may be removed and a new one substituted therefor.
Referring to Fig. 5, in which I have shown a point adapted to change the plow into a subsoil-plow, it will be seen that I omit the T-shaped recess 11 and simply use the long tapered point, (designated in this figure as 14,) providing the same with bolt-receiving openings 15, and having its rear face concaved and otherwise shaped, as at 16, to conform to the facial contour of the plow. It will also be apparent that various characters of points may be substituted for those herein shown, and also that the securing means may be modified without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with a bull tongue plowshare and its standard, of the herein-described plow-point, consisting of a long tapered body portion having its rear face concaved to agree with the face of the plow, and provided with a T-slot for the reception of the heads of the bolts by which the share is secured to the standard, and with a forwardly-disposed tapered fin, substantially as specified.
2. The herein-described point adapted for removable and adjustable connection with a bull-tongue plow, and consisting of a long tapered body portion having its rear face concaved to agree with the face of the plow, and provided with a T-slot for the reception of the heads of the bolts and with a forwardly-disposed tapered fin, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the standard and plowshare mounted thereon, of the plowpoin't jmounted upon the outer face of the share, and having a long body tapered from end to end and terminating at its lowered end below the end of the share, said point having its rear face provided with a longitudinallydisposed T-shaped recess, and bolts for securing the point and share to the standard, the head of the bolt taking into the recess, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in [0 presence of two Witnesses.
. STACY T. BAUMAN.
