' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED S. GIFFORD, OF NEIV BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO ANSEL G. BAKER, OF SAME PLACE.
DlSPLAYlNG-RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,982, dated May 13, 1890.
Application filed October 10, 1889. $erial No. 326,576. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED S. GIFFORD, of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Receptacle, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a vertical central section, of one form of receptacle embodying my invention.
My invention is a display-receptacle and an improvement on the so-called groeers bin described in Hawkinss patent, No. 399,197, dated March 5, 1889.
My display-receptacle is made up of an open-mouthed bin, a movable bottom, and means for raising and lowering that bottom, said means being interposed between the under surface of the movable bottom and a support secured to the walls of the bin.
In the drawings, a is an open-mouthed bin; a, the movable bottom, which is preferably provided with a strip (L2 of rubber or leather around its margins, and so mounted that it grazes the inner surfaces of the side walls of the bin when bottom a is moved. The means for raising and lowering bottom a are interposed between the under surface of bottom a and a support a which-is secured to the 0 walls of bin a. By this construction no part of the raising and lowering device projects above the upper surface of bottom a, and this is important, because a projection above the upper surface of the bottom seriously interferes with scooping out the contents of the 3 5 bin. The means for raising and lowering the bottom a are the male screw 1 and female screw 2, having a handle 3, the female screw Qbeing secured at its lower end in a bearing 4 011 support a and at its upper end in a bearing 5, formed in cross-piece 6, se cured to the walls of the bin. A "female screw 1 is rigidly seen red to bottom a, and by turning female screw 2 bottom a is raised or lowered, as desired.
Vhat I claim is The herein-described displayirig-receptacle, made up of an open-mouthed bin a, a movable bottom a, support a provided with a bearing 4, cross-piece (5, provided with a bear- 5o ing 5, male screw 1, supporting bottom a, and female screw 2, provided with handle 3, the female screw 2 being supported in bearings ,4 and 5, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
FRED S. GIFFORD.
