UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RIENZI IV. MESSMORF., OF VASHINGTON OOURT-HOUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO LFVIS C. COFFMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
CONVERTIBLE HAMMOCK AND CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming* part f Letters Patent N0. 424,329, dated March 25, 1890.
Application iilcd August 24,1889. Serial No. 321,899. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RIENZI W". MESSMORE,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of W'ashington Court-House, in the county of Fayette and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Hammocks and Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
One of the objects of my invention is to 1o provide a folding hammock-chair which can be used with the back and seat at varying angles of inclination to each other.
Another object of iiiy invention is to so attach the suspending-cords that the same can be readily brought by the operator into an upright or to a horizontal position with a slight movement of the body, all of which will be fully set forth in the description of i the accompanying drawings, making a part 2o of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improvement in an inclined chair form. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the saine spread out in hammock form. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view 2 5 of the adjustable hook.
The frame of my convertible hammock-chair is composed of what I term a seat-section and a back-section, hinged together, as at 6, and these sections are respectively composed of side rails 2 2 and 1 1, having rounds d and 5 and carrying the netting 3.
7 represents one suspending-rope with its ends attached to the jointed rails 1 2. S represents a similar suspending-rope secured to 3 5 the opposite rails.
9 represents friction-pulleys suspended from the ends of rope 13, as shown.
11 represents a loop or ring attached to rope 12 for suspending the hammock in any desired position; but instead of this the ring l1 may be retained by an ordinary hook 19, or the ropes 13 may be passed over such a hook.
13 represents guy-ropes attached to the front ends of rails 2 and passing up through the suspendingfring 11 and down to the sustainingpulleys 9, through which run the suspending-ropes 7 and 8. To these guy-ropes is attached foot-board la.
16 represents fastening-hooks, each pro- 5o vided with an eye 17 and shank 18. This shank-hook .is secured to the rope 15 and hooks over the guy-rope 13, as shown in Fig.
1, the shape of the hook being such that when the eye is as small as the rope it will be held by friction to any desired point.
The mode of operation is as follows: The
'hammock is suspended by ring 11, and the occupant, with his feet upon the foot-board 14. and pressing upon the upper end of the frame, 6o depresses the rails 1 and 2 and opens them out into the position shown in Fig. 2. The ropes 7 and 8, working over the pulleys 9, carry them farther forward or nearer the center, so
as to allow the frame to open out. Slightly raising the weight and throwing it into the center of the hammock causes it to rise into the position shown in Fig. 1. The operator by easy manipulation of the body can readily move the hammock into any desired position 7o from horizontal to the upright chair form.
Having described my invention, what l claim is- 1. A convertible hammock-chair consisting of a frame composed of the seat and back 7g, sections hinged together, a suspension loop or ring, a pair of guy-ropes secured to the front end of the hinged seat-section, passing through the suspension loop or ring, and carrying pendent pulleys, and a pair of suspend- 8o ing-ropes running loosely through the pulleys and each having its ends connected, respectively, to the hinged seat and back sections, substantially as described.
2. A convertible hammock-chair consisting 8 5 of the frame composed of the seat and back sections hinged together, a suspension loop or ring, a pair of guy-ropes securedl to the front end of the hinged seat-section, loosely passing through the loop or ring, and carry- 9o ing pendent pulleys, a pair of suspendingloops running loosely through the pendent pulleys and each having its ends attached, respectively, to the hinged seat and back sections, an'd a foot-rest having suspending-ropes 95 15, secured to the guy-ropes above and in proximity to the front end of the seat-frame, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the Suspensionproximity to the front end of the seat-section, loop 11, the guy-ropes 13, pulleys 9, suspendsubstantially as described. IO ing-ropes 7 and 8, and hinged seat and back In testimony whereof I have hereunto set sections, of the foomes 14, having suspendmy hand.
