Be it known that I, BoLLIN H. ARNOLD,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Honeoye, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in Hamm ock-Ghairs; and

which it appertains to make and use the same,

reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are perspective views of my hammock-chair.

This invention has relation to swinging or hammock chairs; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices,as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, the letters a a a represent the side bars of the back, seat, and leg portions, and b and I) the rounds connecting the side bars of the leg portion and those of the back. 7

The side bars are pivoted together, as indicated at m, and the seat-bars a are extended rearwardly beyond the side bars of the back, as shown at n, to carry the stops g, which are designed to prevent the back from folding downward and the seat upwarda casualty which might, by awkward management, happen without these guards. The forward ends of the seat-bars a are connected by the slat d; which extends transversely, and is rigidly secured to said seat-bars. The cloth 9 is attached to the rounds I) and b, and passes over the slat d.

0 represents the transverse foot-rest, which is connected to the leg-bars a. The chair is suspended by ropes attached at four points on each side of the chair, and extending up ward to pulley-blocks p, which are hung to any convenient support. The inner rope, 1', is connected on each side to the front and rear ends of the side bar, a, being usually passed through perforations in said bar and knotted. Said inner rope is passed through a bearing at the lower end of the pulley-b1ock, under rope, and when said block is pulled downward it causes a certain amount of elevation of the seat portion of the chair.

Over the pulley f of the block p, on each side, passes the outer rope, z, which is connected at one end to the leg-bar a, and at the other end to the back-bar a. On 'the front branch of this rope is provided, by knotting or otherwise, a stop, 8, which is designed to limit the rearward movement of the rope over the pulley, and serves to stop the downward movement of the back and the corresponding upward movement of the leg portion beyond the proper position for reclining.

The angular inclination of the back to the seat is adjustable by the occupant by means of the slides c on'the branches of the inner rope. WVhen these slides are pulled downward, the back portion is allowed to fall a little to the rear on its pivots. When, however, the slides are pushed upward, the seat descends, and the back moves forward or into a position more nearly approximating the upright.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
