UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.V
JACOB STRAUS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HORSE-COLLAR lFASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,350, dated March 11,1890.
Application filed November 14, 1889. Serial No. 330,306. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JACOB STRAUS, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missournhave invented a certain new and useful Improvement in I-Iorse-Oollar Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved device for attaching` or fastening together the ends of aseparable horse-collar; and myinvention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is a detail view showing the lower ends of a separable horse-collar with my improvement applied. Fig. II is a longitudinal section taken on line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a View showing the fastening detached and the ends of the collar slightly apart. Fig. IV is a transverse section taken on line IV IV, Fig. I, and looking` in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the drawings, A B represent the lower ends of a separable horse-collar.
l represents one member or casting of the fastening secured to the part B of the collar, and 2 the other member or casting of the fastening secured to the part A of the collar. I make no claim as inventor to the manner of securing these members of the fastening to `the collar, and they may be secured in any desirable manner.
The member 2 is provided with a projection 3, which fits in a perforation Il in the member l, and the member l is preferably mortised out, forming shoulders 5 on the same plane and at an angle to each other, against which the outer end G and the upper edge 7 of the member 2 bear to prevent movement of the parts when attached. To insert the projection 3 into the perforation or socket 4,
the end B of the collar is moved slightly inward beyond the member A, and then being brought back into line with the member A the insertion is made. When the collar is in use, the strain is thus taken by'the projection 3, which is held in the perforation 4 by means of a latch 8,pivoted at 9 to the member 2,and which is provided with a slot lO to receive a lip Il on the member l, as shown in Figs. I and II. This latch prevents inward or outward movement of the parts A B relatively to each other, and thus holds the projection 3 in the perforation 4, as shown in Figs. II and IV.
A fastening thus constructed is strong and durable, is not liable to getout of order, and the attachment can be easily and quickly made.
I claim as my invention- In a collar-fastener, the combination of the member l, provided with a perforation 4, and the member 2, provided with a projection 3, and latch S, pivoted to the member 2 and having a slot to receive a lip 11 on the member l, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JACOB STRAUS.
In presence of- GEO. H. KNIGHT, E. S. KNIGHT.
