SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,497, dated July 9, 1889.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEE ANDERsON,a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in flame-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to hame-fasteners; and it consists in the construction and relative arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a fastener of the class described which isof simple construction, which can be readily adjusted, and in which all strain is removed from the pivot of the lockingdog, thus obviating any breakage of the pivot, Whatever may be the strain.

In the above-described figures of drawings, A indicates a suitable casting provided with the longitudinal opening a, extending from end to end thereof, said opening being made rectangular for the reception of the bar B of corresponding shape, which fits snugly therein. The casting A is provided with the ver tical checks 7) at one end, the forward edge I) of each of which is curved, as shown. Upon a pin 12 passing through aligned openings in the cheeks Z), is pivoted a lockingdog O, through the shank c of which the said pin passes. Said locking-do is provided on either side with shoulders c the edge a of which is curved to correspond with the curved edges b of cheeks b, for a purpose presently explained.
The bar B, before mentioned, is provided upon its lower face with teeth (I, for a portion of its length, with which teeth is adapted to engage the nose 0 of the locking-dog, the casting A being provided with the opening a, through which project the teeth (1. For

maintaining said nose in engagement with the teeth, I provide a coiled spring D, located in rear of the pivot 17 and between the shank of the locking-dog and the partition 61' of the casting.
In order that the lockingdog may be readily manipulated to release the bar B when it is desired to adjust the same, said locking-dog is provided with a finger-piece E, and to prevent the accidental disengagement of these parts, as well as to afford a support for the fingers of the hand when operating the dog, I provide the casting A with a guard F.
To limit the movement of the bar B in one direction, I provide the latter upon its lower face with a stop B, which will abut against the edge a of the casting.
For attaching the hames, I provide one end of the bar B with a hook f, and provide the casting A with a like hook f \Vhen it is desired to tighten the hames, all that is necessary is to slide the bar B in the direction indicated by the arrow, the nose of the locking-dog in this movement riding over the teeth of the bar B.
For loosening the hames, the dog 0 is operated through the finger-piece to release the teeth, and the bar A then drawn outward through the opening for the desired distance, when the dog is released, the coiled spring causing the nose of the dog to again engage the teeth of bar B.
It will be seen that when the bar is locked in position the curved edges of the shoulders on the lockingdog bear against the like edges of the cheeks b of the casting, and all strain is therefore removed from the pivotpin.
