I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,639,,dated March 4, 1890.

Be it known that I, THEODOR SOHWENOKE, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain'new and usefulImprovements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in that class of tables in'which the legs can be folded against the under side of the top plate to permit of storing a large number of tables n a very small space; and the object of my invention is to provide a tablev of this kind in which the legs can be folded or erected for I 5 use very readily, and in which the legs are held securely in place when folded and are also held firmly and rigidly when the table is erected.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will o gitudinal vertical sectional view of one end part of the table, the legs being folded.

To the under side of the top plate A the 3 5 transverse rails B B are secured a short distance from each end. The legs G are secured to a cross-piece D, which is hinged at its inner edge to the under side of the top plate in such a manner that the legs can swing inward-that is, toward the center of the top plateand so that when the legs are erected the outer edge of the cross-piece D will rest against the inner edge of the rail B. The cross-piece D is provided in its inner edge 5 with the recess E, the ends of which are adjacent to the legs 0, and at each end of said recess a brace F is pivoted or hinged, which braces are of such thickness that when folded Serial No. 326,421. in the recesses E their outer faces will be flush with theinner face or edge of the crosspiece D. Each brace .F is provided in its swinging end with the notch H, forming a top and bottom tongue H and H the bottom tongues H being adapted to rest against the bottom edge of the transverse rail J, secured to the under side of the top plate A, and the other tongues H being adapted to pass into notches K in the rail J. A button M is pivoted on the under side of the rail B, and is adapted to pass into a slot .0 or recess in the cross-piece D when the legs are erected, or to pass into a notch P in the top edge of the cross-piece D when the legs are folded.

The two legs at each end of the table are preferably united bya cross piece or brace R, for the purpose of stiffening them.

When the legs are folded, the braces F rest in the recesses E in the inner edges of the cross-piece D, the legs rest against the under side of the top plate, and the buttons M rest in the notches P, thereby locking the legs in place. WVhen the legs are in this position, they do not project beyond the side rails S of the table-top plate, thus permittingof storing a great number of tables in a very small space. When the table is to be erected, the legs are swung into position at right angles to the table-top plate and the braces F swung outward, so that their free ends rest against the rails J, and the buttonsM are swung into the slots 0 in the cross-pieces D. The legs are thus securely locked in place when the table is erected for use, as thebraces F are applied near the legs, which are thus held securely and rigidly.

Having thus described m y invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a folding table, the combination, with a table top plate having cross-pieces hinged to the under side of the same at each end, each cross-piece being provided with a slot and with a recess, a leg secured to each end of each cross-piece, twobraces pivoted in the recesses of each cross-piece near the outer ends of the cross-pieces, fixed transverse rails 011 the under side of the table-top plate, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as against which rails the free ends of the braces my invention I have signed my name in presean be rested,a fixed transverse rail adjacent enee of two subscribing witnesses.
