Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IETER CAMERON, OF SALFORD, GREAT BRITAIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 160,155, dated February 23, 1875; application filed November 6, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER CAMERON, of Salford, in the county of Lancaster and Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented an Improvement in Folding Tables, &c.,
of which the following is a specication:
The object of my invention is a table, bench, or similar article of furniture having folding legs, and provided with thulnbscrews, by which said legs are secured both when extended and when folded for transportation.
Figure l is an inverted plan view of a table with my improvement; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 an end view.
At each end of the table are hinged two legs, B, connected together by cross-pieces C and swivelingbraces D. To the cross-piece E, ou the under side of the table, is secured a plate, F, to which are hinged the braces G, arranged to slide in slots in the cross-pieces D, into which are introduced set-screws to steady the braces.
When the table is in use the legs are depressed, as'shown on the right hand of Fig. 2 and Fig. 3, the braces G assuming an inclined position, and being secured by the thumbscrews d.
To fold up the table, the thumb-screws d are withdrawn and the legs B and braces G folded under the top, as shown on the left of Fig. 2 and in Fig. 1, and the braces are secured to the cross-piece H of the table-top by the thumb-screws, which are adapted to threaded openings in the top or frame of the table.
By the combination oi' the thumb-screws and braces described the legs are securely fixed when extended, and, when folded, are effectually prevented from changing their position.
The ends of the braces G are enlarged, (see Figs. l and 3,) so as to prevent the legs from being moved too far outward from a vertical position.
I do not claim the combination of hinged legs and stays extending through openings in movable cross-pieces of the legs, this being shown in the patent of Rufus Carter, dated August 22, 1865 but I claim as my invention- A table or bench having hinged legs, hinged braces extending through turning cross-pieces D of the legs, and combined with thumb-screws d, itting openings in said cross-pieces, and in the top or frame of the table or bench, all as Set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
PETER CAMERON. Witnesses:
T. E. DAvrEs, JN0. HUGHES.
