SHOE-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,185, dated December 3, 1889.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAJOR J. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshfield, in the county of Wood and State of Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Shoe-Buckle, of which .the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in shoe-buckles.
The object of the present invention is to provide a shoe-buckle of simple and inexpensive construction adapted to be readily adjusted to accommodate the shoe to the wearer and capable of such adjustment without forcing some of its parts into the shoe, as is the case with a number of shoe-buckles in which springs are employed to hold the part-s intact.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a buckle constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a reverse plan view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the link. Fig. 6 is a transverse section.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A and A designate two corresponding sections or plates, which are attached to the sides of the shoe by loops a, formed at the opposite ends of said plates. The plates are curved longitudinally, and are approximately semi-cylindrical or curved in cross-section and readily fit upon each other, and are capable of sliding freely when alink 13, connected to the section A, is lifted from engagement with the section A. The sections are provided with lateral flanges a, which prevent them slipping apart, and the section A has a series of recesses a which are shouldered in one direction and form teeth which are designed to be engaged by the link B to hold the sections together.
The plates or sections A and A are arranged within the link B, which is normally held in engagement with one of the recesses a by a spring 0, which is secured to the lower face of the section A, atthe farther end thereof and within the curve of, the sides, and has its free end engaging a projection 1), formed upon the lower side of the link, which conforms to the configuration of the section A. The link B is provided in its sides with recesses b, which extend upward from the curved lower side a sufficient distance to receive the flanges a of the section A, whereby the latter will be prevented leaving the sections a. The sides of the link opposite the recesses 11 are provided with bends 12 which fit in notches a formed in lateral projections a at the side of the section A, a short distance forward of the free end of the spring 0.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily seen.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to provide a fastening device consisting of two sections sliding upon each other, one of the sections being provided with teeth and the other having a spring-actuated link adapted to engage the teeth of the other section and hold the parts together. This prior construction was designed to be employed as a hamefastener, and, while embodying the same principle of operation, its arrangement and.
construction were such as to preclude its being adapted to form a shoe-buckle without essential reconstruction.
Having described my invention, I claim-- 1. A shoe-buckle comprising the similarlyshap ed sections A and A, curved in crosssection and provided with lateral flanges a, one of said sections having a series of teeth and the other being provided with lateral projections a having notches, and the link having itslower edge curved and provided with recesses b in its sides near the lower ends thereof and fitting in said notches, substantially as described.
