Be it known that I, GEORGE EDWARD RAW- soN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Louisville, in the county of J eflerson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Buckle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention has for its object to make a buckle strong and simple in construction, effective in operation and durable in. use, and adapted to be used for all general purposes for which any buckle can be used, and especially adapted to be used on belts, saddle girts, trunk and skate straps, and in other connections requiring a tight fastener. Such results I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a buckle embodying my invention attached to a belt,

As illustrated in the drawings, 1 represents the frame of a buckle having its back transverse bar provided with annular shoulders 1, and an intermediate reduced bearing l upon which. is mounted the eye of a tongue 2. The eye of the tongue is provided with oppositely disposed segmental flanges 2" forming an intermediate recess adapted to receive the back end of a spring 3, which is secured to the back transverse bar of the buckle by means of a rivet 3 extending through said spring and back transverse bar, and preferably projecting into a segmental slot 2 formed in the eye of the tongue 2 so as to limit the upward movement of the tongue 2 and prevent the forward end of the spring 3 from being subjected to too great a strain. The forward end of the spring 3 is preferably concaved on its under side which bears against the upper surface of the tongue 2, and thereby braces the forward end of the tongue against lateral movement. The back end of the tongue is held against lateral movement on the back transverse bar of the frame of the buckle by means of the shoulders 1 formed on said back bar. By means of such'construction the forward end of the tongue is held under the pressure of the spring 3 and the tongue, therefore, immediately adjusts itself when the desired perforation in a strap is reached, and is held firmly in engagement with such perforation of the strap until released by raising the tongue 2 against the pressure of the spring 3 and detaching the tongue from the strap.

While I prefer to secure the spring to the back bar of the buckle so that its free end will bear against the end of the tongue, such construction is not essential to my invention; nor is it essential that the spring be secured to the back bar of the buckle by means of a rivet adapted to extend at its end into a slot 2 of the tongue. Other means having similar capabilities may be used Without departing from my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination with a buckle frame, of a tongue hinged thereon and provided with oppositely disposed flanges forming an intermediate recess, and a spring having one end secured to the back bar of said frame and arranged within said recess, and its opposite end bearing against said tongue, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with a buckle frame having its back transverse bar provided with oppositely disposed shoulders, of a tongue provided with an eye mounted upon said back barbetween said shoulders, and with oppositely disposed flanges forming an intermediate recess, and a spring secured to said back bar and arranged within said recess with its forward end bearing against said tongue, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination with a buckle frame provided on its back transverse bar with oppositely disposed shoulders, of a tongue provided with oppositely disposed flanges forming an intermediate recess, a spring having saw one end secured to the back bar of saidframe and its opposite end bearing against said tongue, and means for limiting the upward movement of said tongue, substantially as shown and described.

4. The combination with a buckle frame having a back transverse bar provided with oppositely disposed annular shoulders, of a tongue provided with an eye mounted on said back bar and having on one side of said back bar oppositely disposed flanges forming an intermediate recess, and a segmental slot formed on the opposite side of said tongue, a spring having one end arranged within said recess and its opposite end bearing against said tongue, and a rivet securing said spring and back bar together and projecting through said back bar into the segmental slot of the tongue so as to limit the vertical movement of said tongue, substantially as shown and described.

5. The combination with a buckle frame, of a tongue hinged thereon'and provided with oppositely disposed flanges forming an 10 intermediate recess, and a spring adapted to exert a tension on said tongue having one of lts ends arranged in said recess, substantlally as shown and described.
