NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
EDIVARD B. WESTON, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
PAPER-ROLL HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming partpf Letters Patent No. 415,233, dated November 19, 1889.
Application filed January 21, 1889. Serial No. 297,039. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. \VESTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful ures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in paper-roll holders and cutters, the several fea tures of which will be fully hereinafter set forth.
The general features of my invention resemble machines in use for the purpose, and the objects I have in view are the holding the paper of the roll by a rim of the knife held down by means of a weighted lever, and to support the edges of the paper between the knife and pins on both sides, so that the paper may be readily grasped by the fingers. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rearelevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is a view of the side of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the knife and contiguous parts on line a, Fig. 1.
Like letters designate like parts throughout the several views.
A is the base of the frame, and B the top.
H II are uprights which unite the base and top, and are secured by screws entering the flanges of said uprights.
O is a bearing in the side of the uprights for the support of the pinions of the shaft on which the roll of paper is suspended. Near the top of the uprights are pivoted the curved arms D, and to the lower ends of which is attached the knife 0, by a screw entering through a lug of said arm. Below the journals of the roll-shaft in the center of the up- The knife C is provided with a wide rim,
which is nearly at a right angle to the body, and is shown in cross-section at Fig. 3.
The circular dotted line 1 shows the periphery of a full roll of paper, and the inner line 2 the roll reduced. The end 3 of the paper (likewise in dotted line) passes from under the rim of the knife over the pins G, and the paper is cutoff bydrawing it upward and across the edge of the knife, and thus sheetaftersheet is cut off of any desirable length as it is drawn from the roll. The weighted lever holds continuously the rim of the knife against the roll, and the pins hold up the edges, and as a consequence the center of the paper bends downward, so that it is readily grasped beneath the knife by the fingers.
Having fully described my invention, WhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a paper-roll holder and cutter, the combination of the frame with roller journaled in the ends, Weighted lever F, pi voted beneath said journals, connection-rod E, and arms D, with flanged knife O attached, said knife having its flange so held as to bear against the roll and the cutting-edge of the same held a distance therefrom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the curved arms D, pivoted to the frame, and With the flanged knife C attached, and pins G on said arms beneath the flange or rim of said knife to elevate the edges of a roll of paper, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. Y
El) W ARI) B. \VESTON.
