UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVALTER G. HAAS, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,872, dated November 4, 1890. Application filed February 10, 1890. Serial No. 339,791. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVALTER G. I-lAAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Roll Holders and Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in paper-roll holders and cutters, the several features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The objects of my invention are to support the pivots of the roller in such manner that the said roller with its supply of paper will not readily move 011 its axes when the paper is grasped to be torn and to have the cutter of such form that the end of the paper will be held therein in convenient position to be grasped by the hand.
I accomplish the objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is an inner view of the device in cross-section on line 00, Fig. I. Fig. II is a front view of the device. Fig. III is a top view of the blade.
Like letters designate like parts in the three views.
The frame comprises the base C, standards A A, and the cross-bar B at the top. On the inner surfaces of the standards are V-shaped lugs, which form bearings for the ends of the roller F, and near the base are arms A which extend forward and support the blade D. This blade comprises a square edge, alengthened slot 5, and a strengthening-flange r, and is held to the arms of the frame by the screws t t. The object in using a square edge is that the paper may be separated by being drawn down over the upper angle or drawn up against the lower angle. The narrow slot in the blade is for the purpose of supporting the end of the paper in suitable position to be caught by the fingers in drawing the paper from the roll.
The purpose of the V-shaped lugs is to add friction in the bearings for the roller, so that the roll will notreadily turn on its axis. The standards are provided with lugs 11. and w, and through these screws enter to attach the base and top. The circular line B and the extension thereof through and beyond the blade represents the roll of paper, which is wound on the roller F. After putting the roll of paper in the standards the operation is thus: Put the end of the roll from beneath up through the slot, then separate the part beyond the blade by drawing the same against the upper angle of said blade, and it is then in suitable shape to inclose a package. The operation of separating the paper may be the reverse of that described. The end of the paper may be carried down through the slot and separated at thelower angle of the blade.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a paper-roll holder and cutter, the combination of the standards A A, provided with V-shaped lugs, a roll E, and the spindles of the roller E on which said roll is held, said roller having bearings within said V-shaped lugs adapted to act as a brake, substantially as described. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
\VALTER G. HAAS.
