W. ANDERSON. MANTEL.
Patented Aug. 20, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM ANDERSON, OF H ILTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
MANTEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters l?atent No. 409,596, dated August 20, 1889.
Application filed March 11, 1889. Serial No. 302,909. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it'known that 1, WILLIAM ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hu1- ton, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mantel or Chimney Pieces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,suoh as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved construction of mantel. or chimney pieces; and it consists in providing a means whereby the same may be adjusted to suit chimney-openings of different dimensions, together with certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of an ordinary mantel-piece provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same on the line a; m. Fig. 3 is a rear enlarged elevation of the adjustable ground. Fig. at is a sectional elevation of the same.
To put my invention into practice with an ordinary mantel o-such as are now in common use consisting of the mantel-board b, the jamb c, and the various other portions necessary for the construction of a wooden mantel, the ground cl along the top of the chimney-opening I provide at each end with a rabbet or reduced portion 9, which is formed at the back of the ground d and out of sight when the mantel is finished. On the top of the two side pieces h, forming the short ground on each side of the chimney-opening, are formed by reducing the thickness of the wood upwardlyextending projections in, which correspond with the rabbet g on the upper ground cl. These projections 7c, when fitted against the rabbet g, are secured by wood screws Z and will not allow that portion of the seam or joint on seen at the front of the mantel to become warped or twisted and at the same time afford a means for adjusting the grounds d 71 to any desired size of chimney-opening. 13y this construction of the grounds it will be seen that the top portion cl of the same may be lowered to the proper height, and the sides It moved inward, and the whole made fast by suitable wood-screws Z at the back. The longitudinal rabbets g in the lower edge of the top portion (Z are preferably limited to extend such distances within the ends of the top portion as will enable the same to be adjusted to fire-places of different widths. The construction preserves the entire thickness of the board at the middle and prevents it from warping at the place where it is most exposed to the heat of the fire-place and is liable to be chipped or broken either in manufacturing and transporting the same as well as after the mantel is set.
For the purpose of holding the side piece h in proper relation to the ground-piece d and the pilasters c, and to prevent warpage and displacement of the parts, as described, I preferably employ two or three Wood-screws to secure the projections to the top portion, which are passed through the projections 7c from the inside and into the tongue g; but I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to screws, as nails, &c., might be employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a mantel. or chimney piece, the combination of a vertically-movable top portion (I,
provided with a rabbet g, extending inwardly hereunto affix my signature this 23d (lay of February, A. D. 1889.
