SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,345, dated February 16, 1886.

Application filed September 26, 1885. Serial No. 178,297. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY U. POHL, of Hiawatha, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Desk, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention consists of the combinations of parts, including their construction, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

The invention consists of a standing-desk and a sitting-desk connected or held together by suitable devices in such a manner that they can be disconnected when desired and used singly, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference. indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved combined desk, the two desks being disconnected. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the other side, the desks being united. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the wedge used for uniting the two desks. Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional view disclosing more fully the construction of the desk-uniting wedges and key.

The standing-desk A is provided with an inclined writing top, B, in the usual manner, and in its front it has drawers 0 at one side and pigeon-holcs R at the other side, which pigeon-holes can be closed by means of the door S. In the opening between the drawers 0 and the pigeon-holes R a sliding frame, D, containing pigeon-holes and book-shelves, is provided.

The sitting-desk E has drawers F at one side and pigeon-holes G at the other side, and the back of the sitting-desk E is left plain that is, without any drawers or pigeon-holes or other openings. In the upper part of the back of the standing-desk A drawers H are provided at each side, and between said drawers a recess or opening, J, is formed in which shelves K are placed. When the two desks are united, the upper part of the stand ing-desk A forms a top above the sittingdesk E.

A half-wedge, L, is secured on the outer surface of each partition M of each desk at the rear edge, the said wedges being placed vertically, with their larger ends at the bottom. Dowel'pins 1? project from the hack of one desk into apertures in the back of the other.

The key N, for uniting the two desks, has a dovetailed notch or recess, 0, for receiving the wedges L, secured on abutting edges of the desk.

To combine or unite the desks, their backs are placed together and the keys N are placed on the wedges L, whereby the two desks are firmly connected, the person occupying the sitting-desk E also using the upper part of the back of the stanc'ling-desk A.

Vhen the desks are united, as shown in Fig. 2, they are placed in the middle part of the room, so that both desks can be used; and when the desks are disconnected they can be placed separately against the wall and used as ordinary writing-desks.

I do not limit myself to the devices herein shown and described for uniting the desks, but may use any other means suitable for the purpose; nor do I limit myself to any special construction of either desk, as any two separate desks can be united to form my improved combined desk.

Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a means of uniting two desks together back to back, the half-wedges having their longer ends at the bottom, each wedge being located on each desk, so that its outer edge will be flush with the back of said desk, and dovetailed keys adapted to fit on said wedges when in contact, and thereby securely hold the two desks together, substantially as set forth.
