UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ADAIR, OF NEIV YORK, NJY.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,765, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed May 18, 1889. $erial No. 311,326. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES ADA1R,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to that class of articles designated as shirts, and has for its object the provision of a device simple in construction, cheap in manufacture, and which will be efficient in practical use.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of different positions of an article constructed according to my invention; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the bosom of the same, showing the fly secured thereto.
Like letters of reference wherever they occur indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring again to the drawings, A and A represent the two parts of the open bosom of my shirt, which is preferably of the closed back type of construction. To the underlying partAof the bosomI attach an independent fly B, extending the full length of the bosom and entirely loose therefrom, except at the points Z), at the top and bottom of the bosom, a short distance from the edge of the same, and at one or more intermediate points (1. at which places the fly B and bosom' A are connected by tacks or stitches, as is clearly ..\shewn in the drawings.
In practical operation, after the shirt is put on the studs are first inserted in the buttonholes of the overlapping partAof the bosom, and the portions of the edge 19 of the fly B adjacent to the button-holes I) lifted up and detached from the bosom A, whereupon the studs may be easily inserted in and engaged with the said button-holes b, the undisturbed portions of the fly B remaining rigidly secured to and cemented upon the bosom by the starch, as stated above.
My shirt may be very rapidly and economically manufactured, and my improvement may be applied to stock shirts, orshirts that are in use. My improved shirt may also be very readily Washed and ironed. It is handsome in appearance, and is convenient in use, as the studs are so easily engaged with and removed from the same.
As it is evident that many slight changes in the construction and relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but that I reserve the right to make such changes; and that \Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the part A of the shirt-bosom, the tacks I), placed at the top and bottom of the same a short distance from. the edge thereof, the intermediate tacks a and with the independent fly B secured to the bosom A by the tacks 1) 0, of the part A of the bosom adapted and arranged to overlap the bosom A and the fly B, substantially as described. I
In testimony of the foregoing specification I do hereby sign the same, in the city of New York, county and State of New York, this 15th day of May, A. D. 1889.
