SPECIFICATZON forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,769, dated March 19, 1889. Application filed February 6, 1889. Serial No. 298,881. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINOENZ MELsA, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Spool-Stands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stands or supports forholding spools; and the object of my invention to provide a new and improved spool stand or support in which a number of spools are held in rotative frames, so that any one spool can be brought into convenient position for securing a certain length of thread. This stand is so constructed that the spools can be applied very readily, and when applied are locked in place and cannot be removed by the operators.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 2 is a side view showing the spool-holder open to permit removing spools or placing spools on the pins. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 00 on, Fig. 1.

The tubular standard A is secured on the base B, and is provided with longitudinal slots (1 O and D D, the slots D D being above the slots C O. The circular rotative frames E and F are mounted to slide vertically on the standards, which frames are pressed upward by the springs E and F, resrmctively. The spring F rests in a socket in the top of the base B, and its upper end rests against a washer, g, which in turn supports the bottom plate, 71,01": the lower circular frame, F. Said bottom plate is provided with a flanged hub, 7r, which can turn in a sleeve, 2', mounted to slide on the tubular standard A, said sleeve being provided at its bottom edge with a flange engaging the flange of the hub h. The upper circular plate, m, of the lower frame, F, is provided with a hub that rests upon a fixed collar, 02, on the standard A. From said plate on two guidepins, 0, project through apertures 0 in the bottom plate, h, of the frame F, and from said bottom plate, 71, a series of pins, 1), project upward at the rim, and their upper ends can pass into apertures 11 in. the upper plate, on, of the bottom frame, F. The spring E, that presses the upper frame, E, upward, rests upon a washer, E which in turn rests upon the top of the upper plate, in, of the lower frame, F, and the upper end of said spring bears against a washer, G, upon which the bottom plate, H, of the upper frame, E, rests. The flanged hub ll" of said bottom plate, 11, engages the flanged sleeve I, which is provided with a transverse pin, J, passed through the slots D in the standard A, and said pin J is connected with the rod K, that passes through the slot I. in the top plate, \V, of the standard. The hub of the top plate, M, of the upper frame, E, rests upon the fixed collar N of the standard, and said top plate is provided with guide-pins 0, passed through apertures O in the bottom plate, H. From said plate H a series of pins, P, project upward, the upper ends being adapted to pass into apertures P in the top plate, M, of the upper frame, E. The pushrod in of the lower frame, F, is provided with the two notches 7i) and k and the push-rod K of the upper frame, E, is provided with the two notches K and K said notches 76' k and K K being adapted to engage the ends of the slots 1 and L of the plate \V. A lockinglever, R, is pivoted on the top plate, \V, and
can be locked in place by means of the lock S, the hasp of which can pass through an aperture in said lever B and through an aperture in the top plate, W. The push-rods K and 7.: are provided with knobs T.
The operation is as follows: The push-rods K and 7-3 are unlocked, and when it is desired to place spools on the pins of one of the framesfor example, the frame Ethe pushrod K is pressed downward until its notch K is opposite the end of the slot L, and then the end of said slot is engaged with the notch for the purpose of locking the push-rod in the lowered position. By moving down the push-rod the sleeve H and the bottom plate, H, have also been lowered, as shown in Fig. 2. The spools Q can now be placed on the pins P. The push-rod K is then slightly shifted laterally to disengage its notch K from the end of the slot L, and then the spring E, which has been compressed by moving the plate 1-1 downward, expands and brings the plate H from the position shown in Fig. 2 back into the position shown in Fig. 1. In a like manner the lower frame can be opened for applying spools. When the frames and plates thereof are in the position shown in Fig. 1, the pushrods K k are moved toward the ends of the slots Z L, for the purpose of engaging the notches k K with the ends of the slots. The locking-lever R is then placed against the edges of the push-rods and locked in place by means of the lock S, thereby preventing the operators, sewingirls, &c., from disengaging the push-rods K and k and pushing them downward to remove the spools. The circular frames can easily be turned on the central standard so as to bring any one spool on said frames in the most convenient position for the operators to draw the desired quantity of thread from them.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a spool-stand, the combination, with a tubular standard, of a rotative spool-supporting frame, one plate of which is mounted to slide on the standard in the direction of the length of the standard, spool-supporting pins on one of said plates, and a push-rod connected with the sliding plate and passed through the standard, substantially as set forth.
2. In a spool-stand, the combination, with a tubular standard, of a rotative spool-supporting frame, one of the plates of which is mounted to slide on the standard in the direction of the length of the standard, a spring pressing said sliding plate toward the other plate, and a push-rod for said sliding plate, which push-rod passes through the tubular standard and is connected with the sliding plate, substantially as set forth.
3. In a spool-stand, the combination, with a tubular standard, of a rotative spool-supporting frame composed of top and bottom plates and spool-holding pins on said bottom plate, the top plate being mounted to rotate on a fixed collar on the standard and the bottom plate being mounted to turn on a sliding sleeve on the standard, a spring pressing said sliding bottom plate toward the top plate, and a push-rod connected with the sliding sleeve supporting the bottom plate and passed up through the tubular standard, substantially as set forth.
4. In a spool-stand, the combination, with a tubular standard'having longitudinal slots, of a rotative spool-supporting frame composed of top and bottom plates and spools supporting pins, the top plate being mounted to turn on a fixed collar of the standard and the bottom plate being mounted to turn on asliding sleeve on the standard, a pin passingthrough the sliding sleeve and through slots in the standard, and a push-rod connected with said pin and passing up through the tubular stan dard, and a spring for pressing the bottom plate upward, substantially as set forth.
5. In a spool-stand, the combination, with a tubular standard, of a rotative spool-frame composed of top and bottom plates, the bottom plate being moun ted to slide on the standard in the direction of thelength of the standard, spool supporting pins on the bottom plate, and a push-rod extending from the bottom sliding plate up through the standard and through a slot in the top plate of the same, said push-rod being provided with a notch for engagement with one end of the slot in the top plate, substantially as set forth.
6. In a spool-stand, the combination, with a tubular standard, of a rotative spool-frame composed of top and bottom plates, the bottom plate being mounted to slide on the standard in the direction of the length of the same, spool-supporting pins on the bottom plate, a push-rod extending from the bottom sliding plate up through the standard and through a slot in the top plate of the same, said pushrod being provided with a notch for engagement with one end of the slot in the top plate, and a locking-lever on said top plate for keeping the notch in the push-rod engaged with the end of the slot in the top plate, substantially as set forth.
