Description
F. os'rmw. Picture and card Exhibiters."
NO. 142,370. Patented Septembe r2,1873.
WiL/@eevf lINITEE STATES PATENT CEEIGE.
v BENJAMIN F. BOSTIAN, OF NEVlT COLUMBIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENTIN PICTURE AND CARD EXHIBITERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,370, dated September 2, 1873; application filed July 28,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, BENJAMIN F. BOSTIAN, of New Columbia, in the county of Union and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gard'and Picture Exhibiters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, whichform a part of this specifi-cation. i,
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for exhibiting cards, pictures, &c., as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which-` Figure 1 is a front view, Fig. 2 is asectional, and Fig. 3 is a rear, view.
A represents the front, and B the back, of a picture-frame, constructed of any suitable size, and made to show as many pictures at a time as desired. In the drawing, the front A is represented as exhibiting one stationary center picture, and around the same are open spaces for six other pictures. The interior of the frame A B forms a case or box, in which are placed any desired number of plates, D D, made of still' pasteboard, wood, or any other suitable material. Each plate D is provided with six pictures and six openings, all of the same size as the openings'in the front A of the frame, and so arranged that when the plate is raised as high up as it can come the pictures will be directly opposite the openings in the front, and when lowered the openings in the plate will be directly opposite said openings in the front A. The plates are elevated by means of a hooked bar, E, pivoted to the inner end of a lever, G, which is pivoted within the frame, and the outer end extending out through a mortise in the side of the frame. When thus elevated the plates are supported by a key or pawl, H, pivoted in the opposite side of the frame, and pressed, by means of a spring, a, inward under triangular projections b b on that edge These projections increase of the plates.
gradually in size from the front plate to the rear. The key or pawl I-I is, by a link or rod,
d, connected with an elbow-lever, I, pivoted in and projecting through' the edge ot' the frame. By pulling slightly on this elbowlever the key or pawl H'is withdrawn sufficiently to .clear the projection on the first plate, which then drops down and is caught by the hooked bar E. This displaces the pictures on the iirst plate and exposes the piotures on the second plate, and so on, until the pictures on the last plate D of the series are exposed. This plate is never elevated, but provided with a slot through its lower end, so that the hook on the bar E can pass up to raise-the other plates without interfering with it.
The same device may be used for exhibiting cards, advertisements, and other articles.
In some cases the plates D D may be made to revolve partially upon a central pivot, instead of being raised and lowered, as above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
y1. The box-frameAB with a series of movable plates, D D, inclosed therein, all coustructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The lever Gr and hooked bar E, arranged, in combination with the frameAB and plates D D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The key or pawl H, with spring a, rod d, and elbow -lever I, arranged, in combination with the plates D D and their projections b b,
substantially as and for the purposes hereinV set forth.
4. The combination of the frame A B, plates D D with projections b b, hooked bar E, lever Gr, spring-pawl H, and elbow-lever I, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I cla-im the foregoing as my own Iafx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, B. F. BOS'IIAN.
