CHARLES E. VARNER, OF MELVERN, KANSAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,866, dated March 5, 1889.
applicati@ ned inra 22, 188s. sani No. 268,113. (noden T0 all whom it) may concern.'
Be it known that I, @Hannes E. WARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melvern, in the county of Osage and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Washing-Maehines, of which the following is a specification.
)Iy invention relates to improvements in washirig-machinesg and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter describedv and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure lis aside elevation of a washing-maehine con structed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. f3 a transverse section of the same on the line fr ,r of Fig.' l.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the suds-box, preferal'ily of a rectangular con tignration, an d supported by the legs a', as shown. (,)ne of the ends of the suds-box is extended vertically, to provide a rail, B, for the attaehm ent of a wrin ger, as'will be readily understood. The top of the suds-box is provided with an opening', C, for the admission of the clothes, and a swinging lid,D,adapted to close the same. The lower corners of the suds-box are cut away, as shown, and on the inner faces of the same I secure the longitudinal ribs E, of inverted-V shape in eross-secy tion. lithin the snds-box I provide the beaters or agitators H, projecting upward il therefrom, and the cross-bar I, connecting and i bracing the said fingers or agitators.
The ends of the main bar or shaft Gare provided with angular sockets J, which are l engaged by the ends of the set-screws K, and 4 the short shafts L inserted transversely i, through the upper portions of the legs and the sides of the suds-box, near thelower edges of the same. The set-screws K mesh with interior screw-threads in the openings through l which they are placed, and their inner ends engage the sockets in one of the ends of the main bars of the beaters, as clearly shown in Fig. The shafts L are inserted through,` metallic bushin M, fitted in the openings in the side of the suds-box and in thelegs. The Q inner ends of the shafts are made flat or anl gular, and engage sockets in the ends of the main bars of the beaters, while their outcryl ends are provided with the upwardly-extend ing crank-arms N, connected by a link, O, one l l i l l of said eranlearms heilig somewhat extended and provided with an operating-handle, P. Packing-rin gs Q are arranged around the shafts L and the inner ends of the bushings M to prevent leakage.
In the operation of the machine the clothes, soap, and water are placed in the suds-box and the lid closed. The beaters are now oscillated by reciprocating the crank-arms, and thereby rotating the shafts L, the motion of the shafts being communicated directly to the beaters, as will be readily understood As the beaters are oscillated, they will swing to and away from the cut-away portions of the suds-box, and fit between the ribs thereon, thereby thoroughly agitating and beating the clothes.
It will be observed thatthe device is very simple, and that at every stroke of the bea-ters the clothes will be lifted from the water and thrown forcibly against the ends of the suds-box. :ly my device the clothes are effeetually prevented from clogging in the bottom of the sudsbox and can be easily and rapidly cleaned.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a washing-machine, the combination of the sudsbox and the beaters arranged within the tub, and consisting of main bars journaled between the sides of the suds-box near the lower edges of the same and lingers projecting upward from the shafts, as set forth.
2. The combination of the sudsbox having its lower corners cut away, the longitudinal V-shaped ribs secured to the upper faces of said cut-away portions, the beaters arranged within the suds-box and comprising transverse shafts and iingers projecting upward therefrom and adapted to rest upon the said cut-away portions and between the said ribs, and mechanism for oscillating' said beaters, as set forth.
In testimony that l claim t-he foregoing as myown I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. WARNER.
