Description

I. HOOVER. Washing Machine.
No. 229,610. Patented July 6,1880.
I 7 11:1: w m; 7/
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC HOOVER, OF SAMARIA, MICHIGAN.
WASDHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,610, dated July 6, 1880,
Application filed February 26, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo HOOVER, of Samaria, in the county of Monroe and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein ghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view of one of the pounders, showing the longitudinal partitions.
Similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to washing-machines; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a circular wooden disk adapted to fit in an ordinary tub and provided upon its upper side with radial ribs B B.
Disk A is provided with a central upright, (J, forming a bearing for a rotating frame, D, adapted to rest upon a pin or key, E, passing transversely through the said upright and fitting in any one of a series of perforations, F, in the latter, so as to make the frame D, with its attachments, vertically adjustable.
The sides of the frame D are provided with bearings for two vertically-sliding handles, G G, carrying at their lower ends the pounders H H, the construction of which will be hereinafter described.
I is a lever pivoted at the apex of frame D, and having its arms or handles connected, by pivoted rods J J, with the handles G of the pounders, to which a reciprocating up-anddown motion may thus be imparted by operating the lever.
The pounders H consist of inverted oblong tubs suitably secured to the lower ends oftheir respective handles, and provided inside with several longitudinal partitions, K, which form rubbing or scouring edges. The top of each pounder is provided with a perforation, L, adapted to be closed by a flap or valve, M, hinged inside and protected by a shield or guard, N.
When in operation the pounders are forced down the said valves'close, thus causing air to be compressed in the pounders and force the water and suds through the clothes, which are thereby thoroughly cleansed. When the pounders are lifted the valves open for the admission of air into the pounders.
O is a circular hoop or band secured to frame D in a horizontal position, as shown. To the said hoop or band a curtain or cloth may be secured, as represented in dotted lines in Fig. 1, for the purpose of preventing the water or suds from splashing out upon the floor.
From theforegoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. By simply manipulating the lever and at the same time turning the frame D upon its axis the contents of a tub may be rapidly and satisfactorily washed.
Iounders have been alternately vertically reciprocated, and have also been provided with longitudinal inclined partitions. Pounders have also been provided with mechanism for rotating them in the tub. None of these 0011- structions are broadly claimed in this application.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the disk A, having upright 0, supporting the rotating frame D, vertically-sliding handles G, having pounders H, connecting-rods J, and lever I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC HOOVER.
