UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE FAIRBANKS, ()l RACTNE, \YISCONSTX.
CARRIAGE SEAT AND BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,597, dated February 26, 1889.
Application filed November 19, 1888. Serial No. 291,266. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it" may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE FAIRBANKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Viseonsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage Seats and Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the corners of all rectangular receptacles, such as boxes, travcling-trunks, wagon-bodies, carriage-bodies, and all kinds of seats for same. In fact, it is applicable to most anything requiring a strong and at the same time a neat or tasty corner, the object being to avoid the use of glue or nails, or both, and to provide a corner which will not be easily marred or nicked, of great strength, and not affected by the atmosphere; and the invention consists of the novel construction and combination of the parts described and claimed in the followingspeeitication, and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming an inscparable part thereof, of which Figure 1 is a broken perspective view of a carriage'body having my improvements applied.
Fig. i is a sectional plan of one corner as when its sides are verlical and put toplate, D, being provided with tongues cl upon those sides which come in contact with the wooden panels 0 C, and in the latter are formed grooves c c at the proper point to receive said tongues (Z d. The opposite side of the said plate D is preferably concaved, as shown. An outside plate, E, has one side fiat and the other, as viewed in cross-section or at its ends, formed either curvilinear on the segment of a circle or of three fiat surfaces, as seen by dotted lines in Fig. 5. The flat side 6 of this plate E is placed so as to come in contact with the beveled ends of the panels C C and the flat center portion of the plate D, and machine-screws may pass loosely through either plate and be threaded to the other, by which they may be secured together, or ordinary rivets, F, may be used for the purpose; also, bolts may be used.
The tongues d (7 are preferably thinner or slightly sharp on their edges, and the grooves e c of the panels 0 0 made correspondingly. The plate E may also have angular tongues or small projections c e, fitting grooves c o in the said panels if desired, as seen in Fig. 2; but by providing the plate E with suitable beads, a c-, on its edges and making the joint as seen in Fig. 3 an ornamental finish is obtained which, when painted and varnished, has a very pleasing effect.
If desired, a halt-round wooden or metallic bead, G, may be secured at the top, so as to completely cover and conceal the ends of the metallic plates D E, as shown.
It obvious that a series of short prongs I projecting from the plate D in a manner to A. is the body portion, and B the seat portion, of a light carriage-bodyto which m y improvements are applied. 'hen the corner to be made is to form a perfect right angle,
the ends of the panels C C are cut or sawed and secured firmly together by either machine screws or rivets or bolls, the inside embed themselves in the sides C- C would be a substantial equivalent for the tongues d (7.
Having described my improvemeuts, what I claim new, and desire to secure by lletters Patent, is--- 1. The combination, with the panels having their ends beveled and sides grooved, substantially as shown, of themetallic plates D E, and means For securing said panels between said plates, in connection with bolts or rivets l'or clamping said plates firmly to gether.
2. The combination of the panels having their ends beveled and provided on their inner sides With vertical grooves, as shown, an In testimony whereof I affix my signature angle-plate having vertical tongues fitting in presence of two Witnesses.
the vertical grooves in said panels, an out- HORACE S FAIRBANKS. side vertical plate bearing against the bev- 5 elecl ends of said panels and the said angle- \Vitnesses:
plate, and bolts 01- rivets clamping said plates F. M. FISH, and the panels securely together. M. J. EAGER.
