UNITED STATES PATENT FFICEQ cleAR-Box.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 396,114, dated January 15, 1889.
Application filed November 30, 1888. Serial No. 292,243. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM T. ROBERT- sON, acitizen of the United States, residing at Montgomery, in the county of Montgomery andState of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Boxes; and l do hereby d eelare the following' to be a vE ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
illy invention relates to an improvement in cigar-boxes and other receptacles.
Heretofore cigar-boxes have been provided with a false bottom adapted to be raised and lowered from time to time for the purpose of keeping its contents up flush with the top of the box to give itthe appearance of being full; but in the old devices the mechanism was such that every box or receptacle using them had to be made to suit the' mechanism tor raising and lowering the bottom.
The object ot' my invention is to provide a false bottom with sueh attachments that it can be readily applied to boxes of various sizes and shapes without requiring any change whatever in the box itself; and a further obj eet is to produce a much more simple, cheap, durable, and easily operated device than those heretofore in use.
lith these ends in view m vin\"ention consistsin the peculiararrangement and combination of parts, more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l. denotes'a side elevation of my invention as applied to a common cigar-box; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the false bottom in raised adjustment; Fig. 3, a detail view showing the false bottom separated from the box, and Fig. i a modiiication in which the bails are constructed differently.
The reference-letter a indicates an ordinary box provided with a false bottom, b, arranged to have a .tree vertical movement within the box. Attached to and forming part of the t'alse bottom are the upright-bails c, which are given a length less than the height ofthe box to enable the false bottom and bails to be wholly inelosed within the box when the latter is filled, as shown in Fig.
l. Thus, when the box is packed full and ready for shipment its exterior is entirely free from objectionable projections, which might themselves become injured or injure-the contents of the box by eoming in Contact with other articles in transit.
The bails are by preference made ont of thin strips of tin or other similar pliable metal or substance, and their length regu- 6o lated according to the depth of the box calculated to receive them. Thelower ends of the bails may be tacked or otherwise suitably fastened to the sides or ends of the bottom by nails g, or fastened in any suitable manner.
It may be found convenient to provide bails in the form of loops 71., orto provide a pair of bails upon opposite sides of the bottom, as shown at e c in Fig. l. I prefer, however, to
make the bails of flat pliable tin strips, so 7o rigid bottom of the same, and when in this 8o position the bails throughout their entire length lie against the inner sides and wholly within the receptacle. As its contents are removed, the bottom can be gradually elevated and held at any desired height by simply lift- 8 5 ing up on the free ends of the bails and then bending or folding them down over the upper edge of the box, in which position they are shown in Fig. 2. Thus the box can be made to have the appearance of being full when 9o enough of its contents are left to-cover the false bottom.
It is evident that many slight changes which might suggest themselves to a skilled meehanic could be resorted to without depart- 95 ing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not limit myself to the preoise construction herein shown.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters roo Patent, is-
l. In a receptacle, a false bottom, in combi- This objection reetly thereto, in i'he manner and for the purpose set forth.
el. The herein-described ialse bottom, provided with ilat pliable metallic bails secured To its opposite sides, in the manner and for the purpose substmitially as described.
In testimony whereoi;I I aiix my signature in 2o presence of two witnesses.
