Nu. 710,549. Patented 0'0 7, 1902 E. c. vouus.
LID HOLDER FOR CIGAR BOXES.
(Application filed 17, 11801.)
UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER C. YOUNG, OF LIBERTYVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO IIOWVARD PIKE, OF LIBERTYVILLE, ILLINOIS.
LID-HOLDER FOR ClGAR-BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 710,549, dated October 7,1902.
Application filed December 17,1901. Serial No. 86,292. (No model- T 0 (tZZ whom, it may concern..-
Beit known that I, ELMER C. YOUNG, acuizen of the United States, residing at Libertyville, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful-Improvement in Lid-Holders for Cigar-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin lid-holders for cigar-boxes or any light box where it is desirable to hold the lid at the proper angle to display the makers brand on the inside of the cover. A number of different devices have been made to accomplish this purpose, but all have failed to filltherequirements, for the reason that they have taken up too much space in the show-case where exhibited or because they fall 01f when the boxis lifted out, orbecause the lid has to be loosened at the corners to admit of the holder being hooked over the back of the box; also others have been expensive to make.
I-Ieretofore prior to the use of holders of any type cigar dealers were in the habit of turning the lids of the boxes back to afford support when the box was tilted to better show its contents; but the manufacturers objected to this because they went to great expense to have elegant designs to advertise their different brands, which all went to naught if the cover was turned back or de faced. Especially was this objectionable because most smokers go by the box-brand quite as much as by the contents of the box in buying.
My object is to provide a light, simple, and inexpensive device which can be attached to any size or make of box without any change whatever in the holder; and afurther object is the provision of a device of this character which can be easily and quickly moved to different positions on the lid, thereby varying the inclination of the lid from vertical to horizontal as well as intermediate positions,
With the foregoing objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of part s,which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective from the front, showing the application of my device, the dotted lines indicating the portion resting back of the lid. Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation, the lid being shown in full linesin one of its positions and in dotted lines in another. Fig.3 is a detached view of the device, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the bends which insure the rigid connection of the device upon the box-lid.
The device is preferably made of a single piece of wire, as shown, and may be formed to engage either the rightor the left edge of the box-lid, and while one of these devices is sufficient for the support of a light lid, obviously two might be employed, one on each edge of the lid. A represents this Wire of any kind or weight to give the proper stiffness to the holder. Brass spring-wire is preferable or common spring-wire with any kind of coating desired. The wire is bent to form a clamp B at the upper end, which embraces the edge of the lid, front and rear, the front portion being comparatively small, just enough to take a tight hold upon the lid, so
that as little as possible of the holder appears to view. The rear portion of the clamp has a slight bend b about opposite the front vertical bar I), and by means of said be'ndsa tight grip isinsured, without which the holder would slip from the lid. The rear vertical bar 1 of the clamp which bears upon the rear surface of the lid continues downward through a loop 2, formed in one end of the wire, after which it continues downward a suitable distance and then upward, preferably in oval form, and finally'its end is inserted loosely in the loop, thereby forming an arm which rests upon the rear of the box to support the lid.
The holder may be placed in various positions by sliding it along the edge of the lid, so that the inclination of the lid is varied to suit the taste of the merchant in displaying the goods. It will be seen that as the holder is placed lower, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the lid is held in a more nearly vertical position, and as the holder is raised upon the lid the latter assumes more of a tilt, as the full lines indicate in the same figure.
As previously stated, by reversing the arrangement the holder might be applied to the opposite edge of the lid, and, if need be, one could be applied to each edge. Also the size of the holder or the Wire used inits construction could be varied Without limitation, and it is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not Wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but,
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture,a lid-holder for boxes composed of wire bent to form a clamp which is slidably connected with an edge of the box-lid, the portion of wire constituting one end of the clamp continued beyond the clamp portion to form an arm which latter is adapted to rest against the rear of the box while the clamp portion receives and engages an edge of the lid or cover.
2. Asan article of manufacture,alid-holder for boxes composed of wire bent to form a clamp and arm, one end of the clamp portion having an eye or loop formed therein and the wire passed'therethrough to form the arm.
3. As an article of manufacture,a lid-holder for boxes composed of wire bent to form a clamp and arm, one end of the clamp portion having an eye or loop formed therein and the wire passed therethrough twice to form the arm.
4. As an article of manufacture, a box-lid holder, composed of a single piece of wire bent to form a clamp, one end of the wire-
